What are the past simple, past continuous, and past perfect used for?
Past Simple: single or generalized events in the past, often used with words like yesterday, last week, last year, 10 days ago, in 2010, etc.
Past Continuous: actions in progress (process) in the past. Much more specific than Past Simple. It is often used with the following phrases: yesterday at 8 pm, all evening yesterday, on Monday at 6 am, while/when
Past Perfect: used together with past simple to say that something happened before another event in the past. It can be used with these words: when, before/after, by the time... For instance: 1. I had already cleaned the room before you came; 2. By the time you came, I had already washed the dishes
-ING pattern and -TO pattern
