What is matter?

Anything that takes up space.

100

Which material would be the best choice to heat up quickly?

A piece of wood

OR

Copper

Copper

100

What are the three states of matter?

Solid, liquid, and gas

100

This property describes whether an object is red, blue, green, yellow, purple, etc.

Color

100

What is used to measure weight of an object?

A scale

200

What does expand mean?

to get larger and spread out to fill the space.

200

If I want a cooking pot to heat up quickly what material would best work?

Copper has a conductivity level of 398 W/mK

OR

Bronze has a conductivity level of 75 W/mK

Note: W/mk = watts per meter-kelvin

Copper because it has the highest conductivity level

200

Explain solid particles:

Closely packed together

Vibrating

Definite shape

200

Allows the flow of heat or electricity.

Conductivity

Thermal conductivity = Heat

Electrical Conductivity = Electricity

200

If Miss. Mineo collected ocean water using a glass jar and left it out in the sun all day with no lid, what would happen?

The water would evaporate out and only salt would be left in the jar.

300

What is volume?

How much space something takes up.

300

What three properties can you use to classify metals?

Chemical makeup

Smell

Reflectivity

Conductivity

Magnetism

Reflectivity, conductivity, magnetism

300

Explain liquid particles

Close together, but not touching

Moving slowly

Takes the shape of its container

300

A force that pulls together or pushes apart objects made of certain metals

Magnetism

300

If Mrs. Aceto collected ocean water in a glass jar, put a lid on it, and let it sit in the sun all day, what would happen?

Nothing. The lid is a CLOSED SYSTEM which does NOT allow the water to evaporate. The same amount of ocean water will still be there.

400

What is a physical property?

A characteristic that can be observed or measured.

400

When you mix sugar and water it dissolves and you can no longer see the sugar in the water. Since you can't see it, is the sugar still there? Explain.

Yes the sugar is still there because sugar is soluble. Just because we cannot see it anymore does not mean it is no longer there. Matter cannot be destroyed.

Sample Explanations:

We can prove this by calculating the mass before and after. The masses will be the same before mixing and after dissolving, proving that the sugar is still there. Also, if we tasted the water it would be sweet, proving the sugar is still there.

400

Explain gas particles:

Spaced apart

Moving quickly and freely

No definite shape, fill the space in the container

400

The ability of a substance to dissolve in a liquid

Solubility

400

Ms. Scott said that sand was insoluble. What does it mean if something is insoluble?

It does not dissolve in a liquid. For example in class, when we mixed the sand with the water, it did NOT dissolve. You could still see it.

500

What is condensation?

The change from a gas to a liquid.

500

A student wants to design a model that shows that some particles are too small to be seen. Which of the following should they use:

Putting air in a deflated bike tire

OR

Cutting a piece of wood

Putting air in a deflated bike tire

You cannot see the air particles, but you can see the tire expand.

Cutting wood is NOT because you can see the wood, it doesn't demonstrate invisible particles.

500

What is the change of a liquid to a gas called?

Evaporation

500

The ability of a material to be hammered or bent into different shapes without breaking

Malleability

500

If I have an ice cube in a metal pan and it weighed 10 grams. What would the mass be if I quickly melted it over a flame, removed it once it was melted, and measure the mass immediately after?

10 grams (the same).

Explanation: just because we changed the state of matter does not mean it is any less. If we let that pan sit out for a bit or kept it over the flame, the water would eventually evaporate, making it weigh less. However, we are measuring it immediately after allowing no time for the water to evaporate.
