A student is writing a report about sleep. Read both sources and the directions that follow.

Source 1

Falling asleep is not something that just happens as soon as you lay your head down. Your body needs time to relax before you fall asleep. Studies have shown that bright lights make it hard for a body to relax. Lights from a television, computer, or video games are bright. They may cause problems when you want to go to sleep. Some doctors say that you should try not to use any electronic devices for one hour before going to bed.

Source 2

If you sleep with a cell phone next to your bed it may affect your sleep. Some people use a cell phone as an alarm clock. Some talk on a cell phone right before going to sleep. The bright lights of a cell phone, computer, or television speed up your brain. They keep you alert and awake. When your brain is alert, it makes it difficult to fall asleep.

The student took notes about information from both sources. Choose two notes that correctly show information from both sources

A. Sometimes people fall asleep when talking on their cell phones.

B. You should not talk on the phone before going to bed.

C. Some people say turning on the television helps them fall asleep.

D. Looking at a brightly lit computer screen or cell phone screen before you go to sleep is not a good idea.

E. Using your cell phone for an alarm clock may cause you to use your cell phone before going to sleep.

F. Watching television, using a computer, or using a cell phone right before bed can affect how you sleep.

A student is writing a report about anteaters. Read both sources and the directions that follow.

Source 1

Where does an anteater get its name? It gets its name from its diet. Its most common food source is ants. Since ants are found everywhere, it is easy for an anteater to find food. Its long, narrow tongue looks a lot like a long piece of pasta and can be up to 2 feet long. The tongue has pointed edges on it to capture the ants for the anteater. Its saliva, or spit, is sticky and that helps to grab the food also.

Source 2

An anteater can locate termites and ants because it has a sharp sense of smell. It uses its strong claws to help find the ants and eat them. Their nose is actually a long jaw that helps collect insects. Its stomach grinds up the insects. It is possible for an anteater to eat as many as 30,000 ants in one day. An anteater will even eat fruit if it is lying on the ground and within easy reach.

The student took notes about information in the sources. Which note correctly shows information from both sources?

A. An anteater will eat fruit if it is easy to get.

B. An anteater can eat up to 30,000 ants per day.

C. An anteater's body parts help it to get food every day.

D. An anteater has a very long tongue to help capture ants.

C. An anteater's body parts help it to get food every day.

Which of these is most likely the most useful source for more information about the ideas he has written?

A. A magazine article about the history of school sports teams for students in the United States

B. A newspaper article about a boy in Canada who volunteers to help plant trees at a park after school.

C. A magazine article that compares being a student in the Untied States to being a student in other countries.

A student is writing a research report about woodworking. Read both sources and the directions that follow.

Source 1

When building with wood, it is important to find high-quality, dry wood. Wood that feels dry to the touch may not always be dry. Inexpensive devices can tell you how much water the wood contains. If you don't have such a device, look for small cracks on the cut ends. Also, if the wood feels heavier than it should, it probably has too much water in it. Wood that is not dry can cause problems later because the wood will likely shrink as it dries. When it does this, cracks will develop in your project.

Different trees have different properties and colors. Some woods are hard and strong. These include oak, walnut, and maple. Others are softer and more easily scratched, such as most pines. Projects made from pine and oak will be quite light in color. Those made from walnut will be very dark. Some woods, like cherry, are in between. Of course, you can use stain on any wood to make it whatever color you like.

The student took notes about information in the sources. Choose two notes that correctly show information from both sources.

A. Pine is not a good wood for woodworking because it is too soft.

B. Oak would be a good wood to use as flooring, but pine would scratch too easily.

C. Stains can be used to change the natural color of a wood after a project is finished.

D. Woodworkers can use a device to find out whether wood is dry enough to use for projects.

E. Woodworkers must think carefully about the quality and properties of the wood that they buy.

F. You can use a hard wood or a soft wood for projects, but it is important that the wood be perfectly dry.

A student is writing a report about gardening. Read both sources and the directions that follow.

Source 1

You can grow plants without using much room or time. A terrarium is a tiny garden grown in a closed pot. Try to make your garden with two plastic soda pop bottles. First, cut the tops off both bottles. Next, rinse both bottoms well and fill one with gravel. Then, put potting soil and fertilizer on top of the rocks. Last, add 2-3 plants to the soil along with a small amount of water. Plants that like plenty of water and grow slowly are good choices for your tiny garden. You can beautify it with small statues, colored stones or anything you like. When you are done, use clear tape to attach the bottom of the second bottle as your terrarium’s top. Don’t put it directly in the sun or it may dry out. Your little garden will not need much care but will give you much enjoyment.

You can grow a food garden without a big backyard. You will need four things. First, gather up clear plastic bags, seeds or plants, topsoil, and fertilizer. You can buy these items at a nearby garden store. Next, mix the fertilizer into the soil. Follow the directions on the fertilizer bag. Then, fill your plastic bags with soil and tie them shut. They should be placed in a spot that gets plenty of sun. Bag gardens will grow on a porch, balcony, or even a windowsill. Now, poke some holes in the bottom to let water drain out. If you are growing your bag garden inside, put some newspaper underneath it. Last, cut small slashes in the bag and put seeds or a plant in each opening. The slashes need to be several inches apart to allow room for the plants to grow. Soon you will be enjoying fresh vegetables and herbs from your easy bag garden.

The student took notes about the information in the sources. Which note correctly shows information from both sources?

A. A garden needs plenty of sun all day long to make it grow.

B. Gardens should be used to grow plants that can be eaten.

C. A garden must be decorated if you want people to enjoy growing it.

D. Gardens that do not take much work can be grown in a small space.
