In March 1862, Union troops moved down the Potomac and Chesapeake rivers to the mouths of the York and James rivers east of Richmond. By May 1862, over 110,000 Union troops were less than forty miles from Richmond. Union General George McClellan waited to attack. The Confederates, led by General Joseph E. Johnston, attacked. Neither side gained an advantage in this campaign, but the loss of life was staggering. When Johnston was wounded in the battle, General Robert E. Lee became commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.

In February 1864, the Confederacy tried a different type of blockade runner. The Confederate submarine called this left the dock in Charleston with a crew of eight. The crew powered the submarine by turning a long shaft connected to the propeller. On February 17, 1864, this submarine succeeded in ramming a shaft armed with explosives into the side of the U.S.S. Housatonic. Unfortunately, the Hunley sank before it could return to shore and all on board perished.

The first of this battle was with Pope against Lee. On September 17, 1862, at the little town of Sharpsburg on a creek, this battle began. Lee had 50,000 men; McClellan had 100,000. In the bloodiest single day of the war, over 13,000 Confederates died or were wounded; the Union lost over 12,000 soldiers. This battle too was basically a draw. Lee’s invasion of the North was stopped, and he retreated into Virginia. The North claimed victory.
