Last night, about two in the morning, I was aroused by a stealthy step passing my room. I rose, opened my door, and peeped out. A long black shadow was trailing down the corridor. It was thrown by a man who walked softly down the passage with a candle held in his hand. He was in shirt and trousers, with no covering to his feet. I could merely see the outline, but his height told me that it was Barrymore. He walked very slowly and circumspectly1, and there was something indescribably guilty and furtive2 in his whole appearance.
I have told you that the corridor is broken by the balcony which runs round the hall, but that it is resumed upon the farther side. I waited until he had passed out of sight and then I followed him. When I came round the balcony he had reached the end of the farther corridor, and I could see from the glimmer of light through an open door that he had entered one of the rooms.

Meryl Turner, an eighth grader at Ashmore Middle School, was furious when her mother, Sandra, enrolled her for swimming classes without her permission.
She shrieked, "Mom, why would you do something like this? You know how uncomfortable I am in water!"
Sandra calmly replied, "Darling, don't you think it's time you tried to let go of this fear? I used to be afraid of trying out new things, but once I let go of my doubts, I saw how silly my fears were. Please do this for me, Meryl!"
Meryl respected her mother, so she took a few moments to ponder over Sandra's words. Then she said, "OK, Mom. I'm ready to take swimming lessons."
At first, it was difficult for Meryl to get the hang of swimming. While she did OK in the shallow end of the pool, she could not find the courage to go into the deep end. Luckily for Meryl, her instructor Harry was kind and patient, and gave her sufficient time to get accustomed to every area of the pool.
Once she was comfortable in deep water, Harry coached Meryl for two hours every day until she had perfected the basic strokes. After about four months of regular practice, swimming had become Meryl's favorite hobby, and Harry was delighted that their hard work had paid off. That fall, Meryl even made it onto her school's swim team!
One evening, Meryl said, "Mom, you were right to push me to meet new challenges. If I had not listened to you, I would never have made the swim team. From now on, I'm going to use the valuable advice you gave me whenever I'm up against something that scares me."
"I'm so proud of you, Meryl!" Sandra exclaimed as she hugged her daughter.

It was a Sunday afternoon, and Bryan was in his room, listening to music and lazily strumming his guitar. Just then, his parents knocked on his door and let themselves in.
"Shouldn't you be studying for the Math test tomorrow, Bryan?" his father asked, with a stern look on his face.
"I was just taking a break, Dad!"
"It seems like that's all you've been doing these past few days because we haven't seen you study for more than 15 minutes without getting distracted," Bryan's mother said.
"I'm sure I know enough to ace the test, Mom," Bryan said, picking up his guitar again.
His parents walked out of his room, shaking their heads.
The next day, when Bryan was waiting for the test to start, he could hear his classmates discussing what they'd been studying and exchanging notes and tips. When Bryan realized that he couldn't understand most of what they were saying, panic set in, but it was too late to do anything then. When the test began, he realized how ill-prepared he was, and he was almost in tears by the end of it. As he walked back home, he was dreading telling his parents that he was certainly going to fail the test. He was sure they'd be angry because he had not worked hard before the test.
Bryan's parents were in the kitchen when he entered the house, and as soon as they saw his dejected face, they knew something was wrong.
"Mom, Dad, I'm going to fail the Math test. I'm so sorry! I know now that I should have listened to your advice and worked harder. I deserve to be grounded for this!"
To Bryan's surprise, his parents were smiling at him.
"Chin up, son!" his father said. "Making mistakes is fine as long as you learn a lesson from the mistakes you make, and it seems like you've already learned yours."
"Bryan, your father and I are here for anything you need. We can help you make a timetable to study and make sure that you stick to it."
Bryan smiled and gave his parents a hug. "You're still going to ground me, though, right?" he asked.
"Oh, absolutely!" his father replied with a twinkle in his eye.
