What is the definition of gravity?

The universal attraction between 2 objects.

100

_______________ is the amount of matter an object contains.

Mass

100

What are the 4 terrestrial planets?

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars

100
What is the name for chunks of ice and dust like a dirty snowball?

Comet

100

What speed do objects fall on Earth at?

9.8 m/s2

200

What are the 2 factors of gravity?

The mass of the object and the distance between the two objects.
200

The force of gravity acting on an object is the object's ______________.

Weight

200

What are the 4 Jovian planets?

Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus

200

What are pieces of large space rock that are usually located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter?

asteroids

200

What opposing force acts against gravity? It also can prevent an object from falling at a rate of 9.8m/s2

Air resistance

300

Which object's gravity holds the planets in their orbits?

The sun!

300

If you were hypothetically able to stand on all objects in space, on which object would you weigh the most?

I would accept "the sun" or "Jupiter."

300

What is the order of the planets based off of distance from the sun?

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mar, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

300

What is the name of the pieces of space rock that orbit between Mars and Jupiter?

the asteroid belt
300

What unit is used to represent distances inside the Solar System?

Astronomical Unit (AU)

400

If you were standing on the moon, why would you weigh less than you would on the earth?

The moon has less mass; therefore, its gravitational pull is much less than earth's.

400

What would happen to the gravitational pull of an object if its mass increased?

The gravitational pull of the object would also increase.

400

What is the order of the planets based off their mass? (go from most massive to least)

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mars, Mercury

400

When an asteroid enters Earth's atmosphere sometimes as a streak of light, these are now called what?

meteors

400

How does mass affect spacetime (think of the fabric example in your notes)?

Increased mass means an increased bend in space/time.

500

True or False: Weight is determined by how much gravity is pulling you down. That is why your weight changes from planet to planet.

True!

500

If an object has more mass, will it fall faster than an object with less mass?

No, all objects fall at a rate of 9.8 m/s2

500

Why don't planets fly into the sun?

The planets are moving so fast. (inertia plus sun's gravity)

500

Do you remember the size and shapes of asteroids?

They can be as big as one mile wide! They are shaped irregularly.

500

Why does a brick and a feather drop at the same time on the moon but not if we did that on Earth?

On the moon, there is no air resistance, so the feather and the brick fall at the same rate and hit the surface at the same time. The air resistance on Earth causes the feather to slow down and hit it much later than the brick.
