What is the school policy for returning to school after an illness?

The child must be symptom free for 24 hours.

The child must be able to participate fully in all activities.

In the event of an outbreak (2 or more cases with similar symptoms in one class), a child must be 48 hours symptom free before returning.

Where are Allergy lists posted?

The complete School Allergy list should be posted in your classroom in a locked cupboard.

Your classroom allergy list with first names only, must be posted in a visible location in the area where you have snack.

Allergy lists are also posted where snacks & lunches are delivered, in the main lunch room AND in the playground & the library.

Can any parent become a lunch volunteer?

We accept lunch volunteers in our Kindergarten and Primary programs.   

Volunteers are required to provide a recent Criminal Reference Check and sign off on our Supervision of Students and Volunteers, Playground, Confidentiality Policies and our Program Statement.

Let the parent know that we do not permit children to administer medication at any time.   

Admin can administer medication to children in the All Day programs, provided it comes in the original packaging, with prescription label and an 'Administration of Medication' is completed and signed.

Non-prescription medications require a doctor's signature.

What is the proper procedure for when a child has an accident with soiled clothing?

Soiled clothes are rolled, bagged and tied in a plastic bag with the child's name written on the outside of the bag, placed in the cubby to be sent home for laundering.   Soiled shoes should be placed in a separate plastic bag, tied with the child's name and placed in the cubby to be sent home for cleaning/disinfecting.

We may not rinse or clean clothing at school.

We cannot rinse or clean items at school.

Staff and child will follow handwashing procedures.

What is used for cleaning and disinfecting and how is it prepared. 

We use a bleach solution for cleaning and disinfecting.

Each morning program staff will prepare the bleach and water solution in a labelled spray bottle.

Regular Concentration is 500ppm (5mL bleach to 495mL warm water).

For blood and bodily spills or outbreaks a 5000ppm (50mL bleach to 450mL warm water) solution will be used.

Describe the steps to take in a fire drill.

Remain calm and instruct all children to line up quickly and quietly.  One teacher will take the attendance and epi-pens and do a head count before leading the children to the nearest exit.

The teacher at the end of the line should check the washrooms and close all doors (washroom, classroom, hallway) behind them.

Lead the children to a safe distance (ie: Sidewalk), do another head count and roll call.

Remain outside until Admin gives the all clear to re-enter the building.

Describe the steps to properly cleaning toys.

3 methods may be used for cleaning toys:

1. for toys not able to be submerged - spray with a bleach solution (500ppm) and let air dry for 2 minutes.

2. use the two bin method - toys are washed (with agitation!) and rinsed in the first bin, put into disinfectant in the second sink and then air dried.

3. the toys can be washed then put the the dishwasher for disinfecting.

How do you complete an Accident Report

First attend to the child - provide first aid as needed.

The supervising teacher should fill out all parts of the Accident Report, indicating how the accident occurred, the severity, treatment provided, steps to prevent.

Take the report to have signed by Admin.  If the accident occurred in the playground, it must be entered in the Playground Injury log.

Contact the parent to let them know what has happened (ensure the Office knows if a message was left).

Make note of the Accident Report in your Daily Log book.

Have the parent sign the accident report (send home if needed but follow up to ensure it's returned).

Provide a copy to the parent and give the original to the office to file.

What are some of the steps we take to ensure the safety of children with Anaphylaxis?

-emergency plans are collected from the parents in writing.   

-the plan is reviewed with the teachers directly by the child's teachers

-all staff read and sign off on children's plans (in addition to supply staff or volunteers)
