She was the daughter of Zeus but also the mother of his son Dionysus. One day after Dionysus had grown up, she was seen by Hades, Lord of the Underworld, when she was playing in a field of flowers. Infatuated by her beauty, Hades caused an earthquake so she would be swallowed up in it, landing her in the Underworld, where he loved and kept her. However, Dionysus went down and led her (his mom) out. However, because Hades gave her a piece of pomegranate to eat before she left, it meant she must return each fall and winter with him. Hence, her return every spring to the world is the reason Dionysus is associated with the flourishing of grapes, vineyards and wine that occurs each spring when his mom is said to return and usher in the new season.
