What is a school counselor?
Someone who works in the school to help provide academic, career, and personal/social support.
What kind of problems can you talk to your counselor about?
Grades, friendships, bullying, emotions, family, stress, any emergency or unsafe behaviors are all examples.

If you were having trouble dealing with something going on in school or at home.
What is an emergency?
When you are threatened or hurt at home or in school by someone, a loss of a family member or close friend, something that happens that makes you extremely upset, or if you are scared for your safety.
What do you do if you come down to the counselor's office and the counselor is busy or not there?

What is something else a school counselor does besides meeting with students?
Teach lessons in class, talk to parents and teachers, monitor attendance and grades, and help with emergencies within the school.
What is another way you can solve a friendship problem besides going to the school counselor?
By talking it out with a friend, asking another adult for help, apologizing if you need to, share, take turns, compromise, negotiate a plan, move away from someone who is bothering you, use firm but appropriate language, ignore, or be friendly.

When a friend tells you they are thinking about hurting themselves, they are very depressed, or someone is hurting them.

What is confidentiality?
Everything that you talk about with a school counselor is private. The only time a school counselor would break confidentiality is if you are unsafe in a certain situation.
