How do tornadoes form?

Tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms, most commonly supercells, when warm, moist air near the ground collides with cool, dry air above. Wind shear causes this air to spin horizontally, which strong updrafts then tilt vertically. This rotating column of air, or mesocyclone, extends downward, forming a funnel cloud that becomes a tornado upon touching the ground.
