Sandy, rocky soil, and extreme temperatures make this biome a hard place to grow if you are a plant.
The Desert
Name the three types of rocks in the rock cycle.
Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous.
The 3 States of Matter Are....
Solid
Liquid
Gas
What does Abiotic & Biotic mean?
Abiotic is something non-living, like a bike tire
Biotic is something living, like a human/animal.
Food, Water, Sunlight, Air, Shelter (Any of these 4)
Heavy rainfall and hot temperatures make this biome a home to many.
The Tropical Rainforest
Name The 4 Spheres & What Each Is Known For.
Hydro- Water
Bio- All Life
Atmo- Air & Gases Surrounding Earth
Geo- Rocks
The Periodic Table: What is the atomic number, symbol, and mass of Carbon? What is the atomic number, symbol, and mass of Silver?
Carbon: 6, C, 12.011
Silver: 47, Ag, 107.87
Any water that falls to the ground is known as this.
Percipitation
Name the 4 components of the Water Cycle
condensation
evaporation
precipitation
collection/runoff
Extreme temperatures and little precipitation make this biome appear to be a cold desert.
The Tundra
Name the three types of boundaries and each of their movements.
Divergent- boundaries pull apart
Transform- Boundaries slide past
Sodium Oxide is made up of Na2O
What elements does Na2O and how many of each are there?
Na2O: Na = sodium (2 of them) O=Oxygen
________________ the process by which soil, rock, or dissolved material is removed and transported (broken down by rain, water, wind, etc)
EROSION!!!!!
Oaks, Birches, squirrels and bears are all living things found in this biome. You live here too!
The Deciduous Forest?
These two biomes can be found in two very different types of water. The first is far underwater at depths no man could swim too (nor would you want to with it being pitch black). The second most people scuba dive in with diverse types of fish and plant life.
The Deep Sea & The Coral Reefs
The __________ contains all the water found on our planet. The _________ is the solid Earth that includes the continental and oceanic crust as well the various layers of Earth’s interior.
The hydrosphere contains all the water found on our planet. The geosphere is the solid Earth that includes the continental and oceanic crust as well as the various layers of Earth’s interior.
With the 3 states of Matter, describe how the molecules move in each state and why. Give (2) examples of how you can go from one state of matter to another.
Liquid moves around slowly
Gas moves around very fast
1) Liquid to gas (evaporation when cooking)
2) Liquid to solid (freezing ice cubes)
________ is precipitation that did not get (infiltrated) absorbed into the soil or did not evaporate, and therefore, made its way from the ground surface into places where water collects. *Hint: think of the parts of the water cycle*
Runoff / Collection
The crusts outermost and thinnest layer has 2 types of crust: _____ and ______.
Crust - outermost and thinnest layer, there are 2 types: oceanic and continental
Rainy seasons and dry seasons influence not only the plants, but the animals of this treeless biome as well.
The Grasslands
Name the layers of Earth.
Which is the thinnest layer? Which is the thickest? What are the two parts inside made up of?
Crust (Thinnest), Mantle (Thickest), Outer Core (Liquid Molten Lava/Rock), Inner Core (Solid Iron/Nickel).
There are 2 types of property changes. Name the (2) changes and give an example of each.
The Atmosphere consists of five unique layers (the troposphere, the stratosphere, the mesosphere, the thermosphere, and the exosphere). Can you tell me one fact about each layer?
Troposphere- We live here / weather happens here
Stratosphere- Commercial planes fly here / Ozone
Mesosphere- Middle Layer / Protects from Meteors
Thermosphere- Northern Lights / Extreme Temps
Exosphere- Satellites Orbit / Thinnes+Outermost
Explain how rocks can change from one type to another. Use the Starburst Lab for your example.
Starts as sedimentary because all the pieces are being layered together. We turn it into a ball and flatten it out using pressure and heat to make it become metamorphic. The final step is to get cooking, and we see the starburst turn into a liquid, but after they cool and harden, they become an igneous rock.
