What organ is our filtration system?

The liver. It filters harmful substances out of our body.

100

Name all three laws.

1. Inertia

2. Force/Acceleration

3. Action Reaction

100

Name the terrestrial planets in order, starting from the nearest to the sun.

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

100

Describe the difference between a Solute and a Solvent.

Solute - The item put into the dissolver

Solvent - The thing that dissolves the item

100

What makes the tides? How?

When the moon (and the sun) go around the Earth, the water is pulled closer to the moon because of its gravity. This causes the high tides. On the other side, the water is at low tide.

200

What does the Occipital lobe do? Where is it?

The Occipital lobe processes visual information, and it is in the back part of the brain.

200

If you throw a baseball in space, what two things will happen?

The baseball will move forever (Newton's 1st law) and you will go slightly backwards (Newton's 3 law).

200

How many moons does Mars have?

Two, Phobos and Deimos.

200

When flour and water are mixed, is that mixture a:

a. Solution

b. Suspension

c. Colloid

Why?

It is a suspension because it does not dissolve. Instead, it absorbs the water and forms a sticky suspension.

200

What is a solubility curve?

A graph that shows how much a solute can dissolve in a solvent at different temperatures.

Name 3 main hormones in the human body and identify their functions.

  • Insulin - Helps lower blood sugar
  • Glucagon - Raises blood sugar
  • Cortisol - Regulates blood pressure, the body's reaction to stress and metabolism
  • Growth Hormone - Promotes growth and development
  • Adrenaline - Increases heart rate, blood sugar, and blood pressure. It also triggers fight or flight responses
  • Melatonin - regulates sleep schedules by promoting drowsiness and sleep
  • Aldosterone - Regulates electrolyte balance, and particularly sodium and potassium levels.
300

What does Newton's first law state?

An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

300

Which planet is on its side?

Uranus.

300

Describe the difference between a Homogeneous mixture and a Heterogeneous mixture.

Homogeneous - It is the same throughout

Heterogeneous - It is different throughout

300

What does the frontal lobe in the brain do?

It manages thoughts and emotions.

400

Where is the Pineal gland, how big is it, and what does it do?

The pineal gland is in the middle of the brain, it is the size of a pea, and it makes Melatonin.

400

Issac Newton discovered the three laws of motion. Name 2 other things Issac was good at.

He was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, and author.

400

What is the Oort cloud? Where is it?

It is a giant spherical shell around the sun, made of mostly comets and other icy objects.

400

Describe how to desaturate, supersaturate, and saturate a solution.

Desaturate - Adding more solvent dilutes it

Saturate - Add more solute until it settles at the bottom

Supersaturate - Heat the solvent and add more solute. Carefully heat it down to create a supersaturated solution.

400
In the world's biggest vacuum chamber, what happened when the feather and the bowling ball were dropped at the same time? Why?

They landed on the ground at nearly the same time. That happened because there was no air resistance to alter the effects.

500
What is the parietal lobe? Where is it? What does it do?

It is in the top area of the brain, it processes sensory information including temperature, touch, pressure and pain.

500

Name the formula for Newton's 2nd law.

F=M*A

500
Explain the difference between a Lunar and a Solar eclipse.

The Lunar eclipse is positioned, Sun, Moon, Earth.   (the Earth is blocking the sunlight from the moon.)

The Solar eclipse is positioned, Sun, Earth. Moon.   (the moon is blocking the sunlight from the earth.)

500

Is steel an element, compound, or mixture?

It is a mixture because its ingredients are not chemically combined, and they are not put in a set ratio.

500

What is a neap and spring tide? When do they occur?

Spring tides have the highest and lowest tides, due to the alignment when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned (full moon and new moon) and they pull together.

Neap tides happen when the Sun, Moon and Earth are shaped like an "L" or when positioned at 90 degrees (first quarter and third quarter). They are when the Sun and the Moon cancel each other's gravity, causing very little difference between high tide and low tide.
