What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass, can be measured, and takes up space. Matter cannot be destroyed or created.
What is a Mixture?
When two or more substances are combined and don't lose their identifying characteristics.
What is weathering?
The breaking down or disintegration of substances such as rocks and minerals.
How many main layers does the Earth have?
The Earth has 4 main layers.
What is a Sedimentary rock?
A rock that is made of layers of sediment, cemented together.
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object. It is not the same as weight, and stays the same no matter where you are in the universe.
What is a solution?
When one substance is uniformly dissolved in a liquid.
What is Erosion?
The movement of sediment or soil from one location to another by means of water, ice, or wind.
What happens when you get deeper into Earth?
Pressure and temperature increase.
What is a Metamorphic rock?
A rock changed by heat and pressure to make another rock.
What are forces?
Forces are pushes and pulls that can happen to an object. We are all affected by forces at any given time, and we can apply forces to objects.
Can both a Mixture and Solution be separated?
Yes, both can be separated but solutions may require techniques like evaporation or distillation.
What is Deposition?
When particles are carried by water, ice, or wind and are deposited or dropped in another location.
What are the 4 main layers of the Earth?
The crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.
What is an igneous rock?
A rock that was melted and cooled like lava and magma.
What is a pendulum system?
A pendulum system is a simple system. A pendulum system has three parts: a bob, the strings, and the fastener that holds it still. A Pendulum is timed by its cycles.
What is a Solute?
A substance that dissolves.
What is a chemical change?
A chemical change is when objects or substances react to form one or more completely new substances with different chemical properties.
What are the outer 2 layers mostly composed of?
The outer 2 layers are mostly composed of rocky material.
What does the rock cycle originally start with?
Sediment or broken down rock particles.
What is the scientific method?
A systematic, empirical process for acquiring knowledge, designed to minimize bias and maximize accuracy in understanding natural phenomena.
What is a Solvent?
The substance that does the dissolving.
What is a physical change?
A physical change is when objects or substances go through a change that doesn't affect their original parts.
What are the innermost layers of Earth mostly composed of?
The innermost layers are composed of iron and nickel.
What is the rock cycle?
The continuous process describing how rocks change into 3 main types, Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic.
