What's the "Matter"
Physical and Chemical Changes
Insulators and Conductors
100

This force pulls anything with matter down to the ground (technically to Earth's center).

What is Gravity ?

100

The way we measure how long things take, using clocks to tell us the hour, minutes, and seconds

What is time?

100

Anything that has mass and takes up space is made of this.

What is matter?

100

When something changes in its form or appearance but is still the same substance. For example, when you break a piece of paper, it's still paper, just in smaller pieces, and when ice melts, it turns into water, but it's still water. The key is that the material's identity does not change.

What is a physical change?

100

Is a material that doesn't let heat pass through it easily. Think of it like a blanket that traps heat or a wall that keeps the cold out. Plastic, wood, and air are used to make things like pot handles, oven mitts, and the walls of your house to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.

What are insulators ?

200

These TWO forces can slow things down, change direction or speed things up!

What are pushes and pulls?

200

It is the amount of space between two things or places. It can also mean the total length of a path you travel, no matter which way you go.

What is distance?

200

If you add 10 grams of sugar to 50 grams of lemonade the total weight will be this!

What is 60 grams?

200

When a substance changes into a new substance with different properties, like when wood burns to ash, or an egg is fried to become solid. These changes are caused by chemical reactions that break or form bonds between atoms, creating something entirely new that usually cannot be undone easily.

What is a chemical change?

200

Is a material that allows heat to move through it easily, like a metal spoon or a pot. It works because when one part of the material gets hot, its fast-moving atoms bump into their neighbors, passing the heat along like a chain reaction. This is why a metal pot gets hot on the stove and why you can't hold the end of it for too long.

What is a conductor?

300

This force happens when two surfaces rub against each other, slowing down movement. It's the reason a ball stops rolling or you can walk without slipping!

What is friction?

300

It tells you how quickly an object changes its position, like a race car or a running person. You can measure it by dividing the distance an object travels by the time it takes to travel that distance.

What is speed?

300

We know that matter can not be created or this ...

What is destroyed or disappear ?

300

Clues for this type of change include ripping, tearing, state changes, dissolving or mixing!

What is a physical change?

300

Plastic and wooden handles are good types of ______ because they help not to burn your hands!

What are insulators?

400

True or False: Gravity is a force found throughout the universe, not just on Earth!  It's what keeps most planets orbiting around their stars.

True

400

A flat horizontal line on a speed graph tells us this about an object's position.

What is the object is stationary (not moving).

400

A jar of water measures 300 grams.  We know that jar weighs 200 grams. That means the weight of the water must be this.

What is 100 grams

400

Clues for this type of change include bubbles from gases, color change, odor, light, and heat!

What are chemical changes?

400

Metal pots are good types of _______ because they can quickly and evenly cook your food!

What are conductors?

500

Tina rolls a marble down 3 ramps of different heights off the ground: 10 inches, 15 inches, and 20 inches. The marble that moves the slowest would be from the ramp that is ____________inches of the ground.

What is 10 inches ?
500
Ms. Formo began walking her dog Shelby at a steady pace, paused, then realized she forgot her cell phone and had to walk back to her home. Draw the motion graph !
Check the board!
500

The vocabulary word tells us that  that matter (everything that takes up space) can't be created or destroyed, only changed.

What is conservation ?

500

This type of energy means relating to heat or changes in temperature. For kids, think of this energy as the energy from the movement of tiny particles !

What is thermal energy ?

500
Wool jackets and hats make excellent insulators because they help trap this energy made by your body!

What is heat energy ?
