Landslides
what is a landslide?
it is when large amounts of loose rock and soil move rapidly
what are plates?
gigantic slabs of rock that make up Earth's crust
what is a volcano?
it is a mountain that builds up around an opening in Earth's crust.
what is a mudslide?
a river of mud and rock
what is the definition of a flood?
when the sides of a river or stream overflow.
what are some effects of landslides?
landslides can carry trees, homes, and cars, and cause property damage.
what is the definition of an earthquake?
what is a vent?
it is the opening of a volcano
what are faults?
faults are cracks in Earth's crust where the plates come together.
what are the effects of tsunamis?
they can wash away shores, damage property, as well as harm people/ animals.
what are some causes of landslides?
landslides can be caused by
(earthquakes, fires, volcanic eruptions, storms, building houses/buildings in sloped areas (on hill), or even freezing and thawing of rocks)
what can happen when plates move?
Earthquakes, mountains can form, or volcanoes can form
when lava cools and hardens, what can it form?
it can form a mountain over time
what is a crater?
A cuplike shape formed at the vent of a volcano.
what might happen to a city's water drains during a storm?
The drains may overflow and cause the streets to become flooded because the water drains may not be able to carry away the water fast enough.
what are some effects of floods?
-homes, cars, and buildings can be damaged by the flood waters
-floodwaters can be so strong that they can wash away the soil supporting any bridges or roads and cause them to collapse
-floodwaters can erode soil quickly
- wash away anything in their path (trees, animals, cars)
what is a tsunami and what causes it?
a giant ocean wave and they are usually caused by earthquakes on the ocean floor
(a few are caused by underwater landslides/volcanoes)
what is a hotspot?
it is a place where magma partially melts through Earth's crust.
what do you do if a landslide is coming towards you and you cannot run away in time?
you curl up into a tight ball (it helps protect your head)
Most earthquakes happen where?
on the edges of Earth's plates
In CA landslides mainly happen where?
along the coast and mountains
what are the 3 different faults? explain each
1. Normal Fault (the plates pull apart)
2. Reverse Fault (the plates push together)
3. Strike-Slip Fault (rocks slide past each other in different directions)
what are the 3 different types of volcanoes we learned about? tell me a little information about each one
1. Cinder Cone Volcano (cone shaped, has steep sides)
2. Shield Volcano (has sides that are wide/flat, lava flows gently out of it)
3. Composite Volcano (usually symmetric, made of lava and ash, can have a quiet period where lava flows or can have an explosive eruption)
what is crust? *and no not pizza crust lol*
it is Earth's outermost layer
What did we learn about in chapter 5 that can cause sudden changes on Earth? *list as many as you can*
Landslides, Floods, Mudslides, Earthquakes, Tsunami's and Volcanic Eruptions
