About how much of the Earth is covered in water? (a) 60% (b) 55% (c) 90% (d) 70%
What is 70%?
100
Draw the symbols for High pressure and Low pressure. BONUS: What type of weather does each one indicate?
What is "half-moons on a rope" = high pressure, "triangles on a rope" = low pressure High pressure = warmer weather Low pressure = cooler weather
100
Water found in the ground in the cracks of rocks is called: (a) soil water (b) surface water (c) groundwater (d) an ocean
What is ground water?
100
Which of the following is an example of weather? Why? (a) snow with temperature in the 20s (b) long, hot summers (c) sudden earthquakes (d) long, cold winters
What is snow, with temperature in the 20s? It is the only answer choice that is temporary and will constantly change; the other choices are examples of climate and a natural disaster.
100
The weather reporter states, "Currently, it is 98 degrees." What did the reporter use to know this and why?
What is a thermometer, because a thermometer measures temperature.
200
Which of the following is not a sources of fresh water? (a) the muddy Mississippi river (b) mountain snow (c) tide pools (d) southern swamps
What are tide pools?
200
TRIPLE POINTS! How is wind SPEED and direction symbolized on a weather map?
What is a "pie graph" with a line extending from it (SO COOL!) goto:http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/maps/sfcobs/wnd.rxml
200
Which of the following could be a source of fresh water? (a) glaciers (b) oceans (c) tide pools (d) seas
What are glaciers?
200
The climate in Arizona can be described by which of the choices below (Explain): (a) Winter and summer temperatures depend on elevation. There is very little precipitation. (b) Winters are cold. Summer are hot. Precipitation is plentiful. (c) It rain everyday in the winter. The summer has very cold temperatures. (d) Hot and dry everyday of the year.
What is Winter and summer temperatures depend on elevation. There is very little precipitation. Arizona has both mountains and deserts; therefore some areas experience colder winter temperatures and hotter summer temperatures.
200
It is monsoon season and it has been raining all day. You wonder how much rain has fallen. What instrument can you use to find out? Draw a picture. BONUS: What would be the scientific name for this instrument?
What is a rain gauge? (should look like a GRADUATED CYLINDER)
300
How much of Earth is fresh water? How much of it is readily available for use? (a) 3%, 1% (b) 1%, 3% (c) 2%, 3% (d) 4%, 1%
What is 3%, 1%?
300
What does a stationary front symbol look like? (Draw it) BONUS: How will the weatherperson explain the stationary front?
What is alternating "alternating one half-moon on top and INBETWEEN two triangles on the bottom of a rope." The weather pattern is stalled and will not change much for a few days.
300
Water found in the air around us is called: (a) salt water (b) oxygen (c) snow (d) water vapor
What is water vapor?
300
What is weather? (a) a long monsoon season (b) conditions that change everyday (c) summers and winters (d) what a place is like over a long time period
What is conditions that change every day?
300
A __________ measures the amount of moisture in the air and a ___________ measures air pressure.
What is a hygrometer and barometer?
400
Most of Earth’s fresh water is NOT available for use. Where is it found? (a) glaciers (b) lakes (c) oceans (d) pools
What are glaciers?
400
What is an occluded front and how is it symbolized on a map?
What is a warm air mass pushes into a colder air mass (the warm front) and then another cold air mass pushes into the warm air mass (the cold front). Because cold fronts move faster, the cold front is likely to overtake the warm front. This is known as an occluded front. It looks like alternating half-moons and triangles on top of a rope
400
Which of the following is not an example of surface water: (a) lakes (b) ponds (c) atmospheric water (d)streams
What is atmospheric water?
400
Which of the following would be an example of climate? Why? (a) sunny and windy all day (b) tornadoes (c) rainy and in the 50s (d) cool, rainy summers, cold winters
What is cool, rainy summers, cold winters because the other choices are patterns of weather that change every day, while the correct answer infers a more stable, typical experience in a region.
400
An anemometer looks like this (draw a picture), works like this_______, and measures this.
What is (picture like 4 empty cups making a horizontal pinwheel), wind fills the cups and it spins around, it measures wind speed.
500
About how much of the Earth’s water is salty? (a) 3% (b) 75% (c) 97% (d) 10%
What is 97%?
500
How are areas of equal air pressure identified on a weather map? BONUS: What is the symbol called? BONUS 2: What can we know from isobars?
What is a closed-loop line. Isobar: On a weather map, a line drawn through all points of equal air pressure. Isobars form closed loops, and cannot branch or end. Isobaric patterns identify areas of relative high and low air pressure. Since air pressure drives wind speed, we can know that close loops mean higher wind speed, and farther spaced loops indicate calmer winds.
500
Surface water held back by a dam forms a(n): (a) ocean (b) reservoir (c) glacier (d) flood
What is a reservoir?
500
How many climate zones does the United States have? (a) 5 (b) 7 (c) 8 (d) 6
What is 7?
500
A barometer reads 31 mb (millibars) on Tuesday, then 29.7 inHg (inches of Mercury) on Wednesday. What is the weather most likely doing?
What is the air pressure is lowering, a cold front is moving through and it might rain.
