The Earth’s surface is covered with a variety of different landforms that were formed by erosion and
deposition. Explain three agents of that cause erosion and deposition and describe how these processes
create landforms.
Answer: The processes of erosion and deposition are caused by water, wind, and ice.
Running water carries away weathered rock material, carving out canyons. The eroded rock material can
be carried long distances in rivers and then deposited at the mouth of a river, forming a delta, where the
speed of the water slows, and the sediment settles out. The building of dams can trap sediment, keeping
it from getting to the mouth of the river and thus causing the delta to erode away. Wind can pick up
sediment, especially in dry areas, and the sandblasting effect can sculpt rock into a variety of shapes.
Wind can also deposit sand around obstacles, where it can pile up and create sand dunes. Glaciers erode
