Explain the difference between an Independent variable and a Dependent variable

The difference between an Independent variable and a Dependent variable is that an Independent variable is the variable scientist change on purpose and the Dependent variable is changed based on the outcome of changing the Independent variable.

100

How do you know if something is matter.

If something is matter than it takes up space and it has mass.

100

Explain what technology and science are.

Technology-The application of science used for practical purposes

Science-Thes study of the natural world

100

Name five examples of matter.

Five examples of matter are; beakers, pigs, horns, tables, glitter, and stickers.

*Examples will vary(except for light and sound)

100

Why do you always have to do your experiment a couple of times?

You should do an experiment a couple of times because it won't necessarily be accurate on the first try, so you can do it a couple of times and there will be more chances, more accuracy.

200

Explain what a hypothesis is and how you use it in an experiment.

A hypothesis is an educated guess, that must be testable. You use a hypothesis in an experiment because the whole experiment revolves around the hypothesis to see whether it is true or not.

200

Explain what mass is and list 3 units you can measure it with.

Mass is the amount of matter in something, no matter where you put it the mass will always stay the same. Mass is the measure of particles inside something. Three units I can measure mass are pounds, newtons, and grams.

*1 newton=1/4 pound

200

Is newer more elaborate technology better than simple technology?

Just because the technology is newer and more complex better that does not mean it is better than simple technology. Like, zippers and computers. They are both very important, zippers, close your clothes and help keep you warm, computers help you do homework, create sites, etc.

200

Explain what volume measures.

Volume measures the amount of space something takes up.

200

Why should you not trust commercial websites, name a kind of website you should trust?

You should not trust commercial websites because usually, they are just trying to sell something, but you should trust academic web pages, government web pages, etc.

300

Name three parts of an experiment, and how we use them.

Observing-to get the data

Hypothesis-the statement that the experiment revolves around

Conclusion- The statement that answers whether the hypothesis is correct or not

300

How do you measure Volume?

You measure volume using water displacements, graduated cylinders, and formulas. Example; rectangle=length x width x height

300

Explain what Civil Engineers do in detail. Do they have any limitations, what do they do to solve it?

Civil Engineers are engineers who design and maintains social structures such as bridges, roads, and dams. Civil engineers have restrictions, they have to work with the law of physics, gravity, money, and safety/ environmental regulations. They solve this by doing trade-offs, trade-offs are when people give up one advantage for another. Such as stronger metal but for more money.

300

Name two of the Scientific Methods.

1. Ask a question/Define a problem

2.Plan an experiment

*Answers may vary

300

Why do astronauts weigh less than on the moon than on the Earth?

Astronauts weigh less on the moon than on the Earth because the moon has less mass which means less gravitational force, so it weighs less.

400

Name all the variables there are in an experiment and how many of them there are at one.

Independent variable-1

Dependent variable-1

Control vraiables-as many as the experiment needs

400

Why do things sink or float?

Objects sink or float depending on density. If the density of the object is greater than the thing that it is in then the object will sink, if the object's density is less than the thing that they are it then it will float.

400

Name at least 3 skills you should have to be an engineer

3 skills you should have are to be able to think smartly, be able to use models and math, and be able to think out of the box.

*Others- Prototypes, use technology and science

400

Why is it important to write down all your data?

It is important to write down all your data because scientists base their conclusion on the data that they collect

400

How do Scientific Models work and help scientists?

Scientific Models are models that show things over long periods of time, these help scientist who study plants and animals.

500

After you collect your data, and you have extra information is it good or bad. If yes, how can it be used, if no give an explanation.

If you have extra information it can still be used, because the extra information can be used to form a better hypothesis(/experiment).

500

What are the three formulas for Density, Mass, Volume?

Density=Mass/Volume

Mass=Volume x Density

Volume=Mass/Density

500

EXplain the Engineering Design Process.

The Engineering Design Process =

-Brainstorm                                                        -Identify needs                                                    -Conduct research/prototypes                             -Communicate results                                             -Evaluate/ build a conclusion

500

Explain why scientist make prototypes.

Scientists make prototypes as models, so they can analyze what is wrong with it and keep on changing it until they are satisfied.

500

Why do scientists want to discover things?

Scientists want to discover things so they can learn more about our world and answer the questions that have been lurking around, but others may just do it for the pleasure.
