What does weathering do?
Weathering breaks rock down rocks into small pieces. Examples are when wind, rain and water break rocks apart.
100
Give three examples of resources and how we use them.
Examples 1: trees: used for materials in paper, clothes and others 2: metals: used for building 3: water: used for sustaining life
100
What three things are important about soil?
Soil forms in layers. Soils are different from one another. Soils are very important ot people, plants and animals.
100
What is sand?
pieces of rock. You can see them with your eyes.
100
What is weathering?
It is the way rocks are broken down into smaller pieces
200
What does erosion do?
After rocks are broken down by weathering erosion moves the pieces. Water and wind cause most erosion.
200
What is a renewable resource? Definition and an example
A resource that can be replaced during a human lifetime. Examples: trees, plants, animals...
200
What are the three layers of soil?
What is topsoil, subsoil and bedrock?
200
What is silt?
Smaller pieces of rock than sand. You cannot see the grains, but you can feel them.
200
What is a glacier?
It is a huge block of moving ice that looks like a giant rock.
300
How do glaciers cause erosion?
It is a huge block of moving ice. As they move, they pick up rocks and soil. When they melt, they drop the rocks and soil.
300
What is a nonrenewable resource? definition and an example
A resource that cannot be replaced during a human lifetime. oil, coil, minerals...
300
How are soils different?
Soils have different colors, textures, rock sizes and different abilities to hold water.
300
What is clay?
The smallest pieces of rock. You cannot see or feel them.
300
What is Erosion?
Erosion is the movement of weathered rocks often by water.
400
What is creep?
Creep is a very slow type of erosion that moves rocks and soil. It can bend fences and walls over time.
400
What is a reusable resource? provide definition and an example
A resource that can be used again and again. Ex. Water and air
400
What do all soils have?
All soils have water, humus, air, and small pieces of rocks.
400
What is humus?
It is the part of soil that is made up of parts of dead plants and animals.
400
How do people use land?
People live on land, build on land, use resources from land, and for farming.
500
How is weathering with wind and rain different than erosion with wind and rain?
Weathering with water is mostly caused by frozen water that expands in cracks and breaks rock apart. Wind also breaks down rock by picking up sand and then smashing it against rocks. Erosion with water is when the water carries the weathered rocks into streams or rivers and moves them. Strong winds can move weathered rocks from one place to another.
500
What are the differences between renewable, nonrenewable and reusable resources.
Renewable resources can be grown or made again. Reusable resources can be used again and again, although they meay need to be cleaned first. Nonrenewable resources cannot be replaced. Once they are used up there will be no more.
500
What are the different types of soils how are they different?
What is sand, silt, and clay. Sand has tiny pieces of rock you can see Silt has tinier pieces of rock you cannot see but feel Clay has the tiniest pieces of rock you cannot see or feel
500
What is loam?
Loam is a mixture of humus, clay, silt, and sand that is very good for growing plants.
500
What is pollution?
Any harmful material in the environment.
