Why do trees turn orange/yellow during the fall?

Trees change color in the fall because they get ready for winter by stopping their green food-making (photosynthesis), which makes the hidden yellows, oranges (carotenoids), and reds (anthocyanins) appear as the green chlorophyll fades away, like taking off a green shirt to see colorful clothes underneath!. Shorter days and cooler nights are the signals that tell the tree to stop making chlorophyll, revealing the pretty colors that are already in the leaves or that get made in the fall.
