A series of steps followed to solve problems
What is the scientific method?
The judgement based on the results of an experiment.
What is drawing the conclusion?
Step 2.
What is forming the hypothesis?
A scientist who wants to study the affects of fertilizer on plants sets up an experiment. Plant A gets no fertilizer, plant B gets 5 mg of fertilizer each day, and plant C gets 10 mg of fertilizer each day. Which plant is the control group?
Plant A.
If I use oak in my wood-stove, then it will burn longer then other woods like ash or spruce. What is the dependent variable?
The time the wood burns.
The factor that the scientist manipulates in an experiment.
What is the independent variable?
The "untouched" group in an experiment in which factor(s) held constant.
What is the control group?
The step number that you draw conclusions.
What is step 5?
An investigation was done to see if keeping the lights on for different amounts of time each day affected the number of eggs chickens laid. What is the independent variable?
Keeping the lights on for different amounts of time each day.
The amount of algae growth in lakes seems to be directly related to the number of bags of phosphate fertilizer sold by the local merchants. What is the dependent variable?
The amount of algae growth in lakes.
The step in the scientific method where the research is designed to test the hypothesis.
What is the experiment step?
The factor that responds to manipulated variable.
What is the dependent variable?
The step number that you test the hypothesis.
What is step 3?
The amount of pollution produced by cars was measured for cars using gasoline containing different amounts of lead. What is the independent variable?
The gasoline containing different amounts of lead.
A student believes that if you soak a gummy bear in salt water it will become smaller. What would be the control group?
A gummy bear that is not soaked in salt water (not tested).
The group that is manipulated in some way to test the hypothesis.
What is the experimental group?
An educated guess to a question that can be tested.
Step 1.
What is making an observation and asking a question?
The variable that is recorded as data.
What is the dependent variable?
I think basketballs inflated with more air bounce higher. Rewrite this statement as a testable hypothesis (In if....then form).
If inflated with more air, then a basketball will bounce higher.
Using one or more of your senses to gather information directly or indirectly through the use of technology or instruments.
What is making an observation?
The observations and measurements recorded during an experiment.
What is the data?
Step 4.
What is collecting and analyzing the results?
My hypothesis is that if I use oak in my wood-stove, it will burn longer then other woods like ash or spruce. What should remain consistent with the different types of logs within the experiment?
The size and mass of the logs.
I think playing classical music for a plant will make it grow at a quicker rate. Rewrite this statement as a testable hypothesis (In if....then form).
If classical music is played around a plant, then it will grow at a quicker rate.
