John’s class investigated the effectiveness of compost on plant growth. They spread compost on a bean plant and recorded its growth for a total of 30 days.  They found that the plant grew 10 inches in 30 days.

There is no control group

How do we define the word hypothesis

What is an educated guess

100

What are the two types of variables in an experiment

What is Independent and Dependent.

True or false: you are allowed to research your question before writing a hypothesis

true!

What step of the scientific method do you test your hypothesis?
What is Experiment.

Tessa wanted to grow her hair longer, and saw on social media that rice water promotes hair growth.  Tessa makes rice water according to the instructions in the video.  First, she measures her hair length.  Every night, she sprays the roots of her hair with the rice water.  She has no way of measuring the exact amount of rice water, so it varies every night.  She also forgets to spray it on nights when she has soccer games, which are random.  After one month, she measures her hair and finds that it grew half an inch.

Amount of rice water was not held constant

Putting my plant in the closet will decrease it's chance of living. What is wrong with this hypothesis?

What is... it is missing "If" and "Then"

What is the responding variable or factor that may or may not change due to manipulation?
What is Dependent Variable.

How old is Ms. Szalach?

300

What step in the scientific method do you use the 5 senses to record what happened?

What is observation

Ms. Szalach wants to know if Celcius energy drinks actually give you more energy. To test it, she first runs WITHOUT drinking an energy drink.  She runs on a treadmill at 6.0 mph (10 minute mile pace) until she feels like she cannot run any longer.  She finds that she can run 4 miles.  The next day, she drinks a celsius 30 minutes before running.  After 30 minutes, she runs on the treadmill at 8.0 mph until she feels she cannot run anymore.  She finds she can run only 3 miles.  Ms. Szalach concludes that Celcius energy drinks do not give you more energy.

Speed was not held constant

How does drinking milk impact bone strength? State a good hypothesis for this question.

What is...If you increase the amount of milk you drink, then you will increase the strength of your bones because...

300
What is the term we use to describe the manipulated variable or factor that the experimenter intentionally changes?
What is Independent Variable.

What kind of dog does Mr. Reich have?

pitbull (?)

In which step of the scientific method do you answer the why of your experimental results?

What is analysis

Maurice wants to know the best way to clean a penny.  He takes three pennies.  One he washes with soap and water.  One he allows to sit in vinegar for 24 hours.  The last penny he allows to sit in club soda for 24 hours.  After 24 hours, he compares how shiny each of the pennies is.

One he washed and the other two were soaked- method of cleaning was not constant

How does smoking cigarettes impact your chance of getting lung cancer? State a good hypothesis for this question.

What is...If you increase the number of cigarettes you smoke, then you will increase your chance of getting lung cancer because...

In an experiment what are the variables that are not being studied that are held constant so that they do not influence the experimental outcome called?

What is Control.

Jacob thinks that if he eats a healthy lunch, he will get better scores on his math tests (he has math class immediately after lunch).  On the day of his unit 1 math test, which is mostly review material from last year, he eats an unhealthy lunch consisting of cookies, brownies, ice cream, and potato chips.  A month later on the day of his unit 2 math test, which contains new material, he eats a healthy lunch.  Jacob’s healthy lunch consists of a turkey sandwich, carrots and celery, a bottle of water, and pretzels.  Jacob gets  95% on his unit 1 test, and an 89% on his unit 2 test.  Jacob concludes that an unhealthy lunch helps him do better on tests.

The second test was harder, skewing results

Read the following experiment and state a good hypothesis. I am doing a test to see if there is a connection between how long you run and how fast your heart beats. I will be performing an experiment where a person will run for a 1 minute and I will check their heartbeat. Then they will run for 2 minutes and I will check their heart rate. I will do this up to 6 minutes and see if there is a connection. What do you think my hypothesis should be?

What is...If I increase the amount of time I run, then my heartbeat will increase because...

Find the independent and dependent variables in the following experiment: If you increase the number of times you practice shooting free-throws, then you will increase your chances of making a basket every time.
What is Independent- practice shooting free throws, Dependent- making baskets.

Thinking about the hypothesis: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase. What might a constant in this experiment be?

What is... using the same potting soil, making sure both plants have an equal amount of light etc.
