She earned a master's degree in mathematics. She and her husband created a theory of radioactivity. They found different ways to separate radioactive isotopes and discovered two new elements: radium and polonium. She used her own studies in radioactivity to develop a new treatment for cancer. These treatments used radioactive isotopes.

He developed techniques to improve soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted farmers to be able to grow alternative crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life.

She was an American obstetrical anesthesiologist. She was a leader in the fields of anesthesiology and teratology, and introduced obstetrical considerations to the established field of neonatology. She is best known as the inventor of the score that is a way to quickly assess the health of newborn children immediately after birth.
