DOUBLE JEOPORDY- DOUBLE QUESTIONS:

1. How might a parent or caregiver act if they are on drugs?

2. Whos is to blame for a parent doing drugs?

1. Some may be more tired, less talkative, and zoned out (kind of like a zombie.) Others may be more hyper.    Drugs can also make people more angry and violent.

2. the person taking the drug is to blame. Although someone can give them the drug, it is the parent that is making the choice. It is never the kids fault!

If a child was missing the love and attention from a parent or caregiver growing up, could that make it hard for them to trust other people?

It can take time and that's ok because they are probably used to having to protect themselves. What can be helpful is to remind themselves that there are plenty of people that love them no matter what and will take care of them because they deserve it. Once people prove that, then we can learn to love and trust others more and more.

How does the law help with kids who have experinced neglect or abuse?

DSS or CPS may get involved to first help the caregiver/parent. If they have attempted many times to help and the parents don't change, then they may place the child with another family member or in foster care.

Having a parent and caregiver that does not take care of the child the way they should can affect how they trust others in the future. Why or why not?

It can definitly affect how someone trusts others. The child counted on their parent and when disappointed and feeling unloved that can make it hard to believe that someone else can step up and do what they deserve.

Why might kids not tell other adults the bad things that are happening in the home? Like abuse, neglect, drugs...

Many reasons: because they love the parent, because they don't want the parent to get into trouble, because they feel like someone might hurt them if they tell, because someone told them not to tell.

Do you think an older child having to take care of a younger child is an example of Neglect? Why or Why not?

It is absolutely an example of Neglect. It is not a child's job to feed, cloth, take care of their younger brother. It is the parent's job. Kids can be helpful to their parents by doing simple tasks, but should not acting like the parent.

Fight back, Flight (run away), and Freeze (stay still/not say anything) are ways that kids react to abuse and neglect. ALL ARE THREE ARE SUPERSTAR MOMENTS!!

Why do you think they are superstars?

All three examples are ways in which a child was protecting themselves. They only little kids, making it hard to know what to do.
