This invention allowed for Europeans to travel beyond the coastlines of Africa into the interior of the continent more easily. This made colonizing and extracting resources much easier.

What is a barbarian?
This means to deny someone rights, or to take away their power or their political freedom. This often results in a prolonged cruel treatment of a people.
What is oppression?
This prolonged form of extreme oppression put many parts of Africa at a disadvantage when attempting to resist European colonization.

This term refers to groups of people, and their ways of life. In other words, it is referring to societies and culture.

Although over 90% of the continent of Africa would eventually be colonized by European imperialist nations, these two nations managed to resist colonization.

A period of rapid growth in the use of machines to mass produce goods. This led to many technological advancements in (but not limited to) weaponry, transportation, and medicine.

Cecil Rhodes, infamous imperialist, known for his brutal treatment of Africans who were forced to work for him in his diamond mines, was from this European nation.
