We meet Citra, and Scythe Faraday comes in for dinner, granting immunity to her family and gleaning her neighbor. Then we meet Rowan, who is the "lettuce" of his family, and Tyger, the "splatter." Scythe Faraday gleans Khol Whitlock and everyone becomes scared of Rowan. Rowan and Citra both get letters that invite them to the opera, finding out they are to become "Scythe Apprentices." They learn about the expectations of a scythe and we learn more about their world. There is a massacre on a plane, where 4 unnamed scythes go on a killing spree. We are then introduced to Esme, and the tragedy of the food court. Rowan then is in charge of his first gleaning, and Citra cleans weapons. Readers learn more about their feelings for each other. Rowan and Citra attend the conclave and see the life inside the scythehood. We mee Scythe Curie, and Scythe Goddard, and the head scythe, Xyunocrotes. Lastly, Rowan and Citra continue their scythe duties until Faraday goes missing, and we learn that he "gleaned himself," they are to be displaced with different scythes.
