Tom Robinson has been arrested for the rape of Mayella Ewell, and we believe that he is innocent because in chapter 17 it was mentioned that Mayah Ewell had a black eye on her right eye, and only a person with a left hand could do that. Atticus asks Bo Ewell to write name, the man writes with his left hand, that suggests that he may be the rapist, and not Tom.

Aunt Alexandra is unexpedly waiting for Finch children and Calpurnia, telling them that she will be staying with them for a while.

Atticus is implying that with the innocence that children retain, can help in certain situations. This is proven after how Scout was able to bring a man back to his senses, while an adult couldn't.

They grow distant because Jem is growing up and does not like to be around younger kids anymore, leaving Scout hurt and confused. Their relationship begins to fade a bit but there are still times where Jem will accompany Scout and choose to be with her.

Atticus persuades Bob Ewell to write out his name, and when he does this, he does with his left hand, before confirming this, he asks if Bob is ambidextrous, to which he says no, and then this immediately suggests that Bob Ewell may have raped Mayah Ewell, as Mr. Tate says that that Mayella Ewell was punched in the right eye, and the only a left hand can punch a person in the right eye.

Atticus and Aunt Alexandra have an argument where Atticus defends Calpurnia as Aunt Alexandra wants to get rid of her. Atticus tells Aunt Alexandra that the family would be nothing without Calpurnia and that they needed her. He says that Calpurnia has raised the children better than any mother could.

What was the meaning of Scout and Mr. Cunningham’s encounter with one another? What was the meaning of it?
This moment represents how Scout’s innocence was able to rectify the situation, she was able to bring Mr. Cunningham back to his senses and understand what was going on. Scout had brought him back and put him into Atticus’ shoes allowing him to see the Ssituation. It shows how everyone has good in them despite seeming like a bad person. That night, Mr. Cunningham came to Atticus with bad intentions in mind but came back with his senses all because of Scout and her naive mind.
