Using SOC to adapt in the face of extremely restricted resources may make management of these limits harder. In this case we could give the older adult something to look forward to such as creating an activity that they will enjoy or finding resources to support them in a way that would help them as an individual.

What would you do if you were working with an older adult that has declining eyesight and is very distraught that they can no longer do the things they love like reading and playing the piano?

Encourage the older adult to adapt their previous abilities and coping strategies to their current difficulties. For example, we could introduce audiobooks to them and help them navigate to their favorite genre as well as having someone play the piano next to them or for them.
