How can you include people with disabilities?
Invite them to join, offer jobs, offer opportunities or learn about them as people.
How to be safe in your community?
Ask for help, call 911 in emergency, use your cellphone or ask to use someones, go to a security guard. Be aware of your surrounds looking both ways and phone away when you walk.
How can we make the community more accessible?
Advocate for Elevators, braille, handrails, beach wheelchairs, ASL, etc. Know your local politicians and talk to them, talk to the city.
How can you make sure that important things come in plain language?
Mayor and council, reach out to organizations, offer support to encourage new words, make sure that we create things in accessible language, get support to understand
How should you treat people with disabilities or anyone who is different from you?
Treat them with respect, treat adults as adults. Get to know people.
What does community mean to you?
Safe, supportive, included, connected, independent, friends
What are some things that would make the community more accessible for you?
Less stairs, flat curbs, buttons for doors to open, supportive serving staff (when ordering and paying), more people that understand how to treat people with disabilities, ASL, Braille and elevators to name a few

Any age and any place
How can you advocate for yourself when you are not being treated well?
Say stop, and let them know your boundaries. Can ask someone to support you like another adult, staff, caregiver or friend/family.

Community bulletin boards, google, libraries, ask other people, newspaper/coffee news, social media
How are some ways the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo have helped with accessibility in the community?
Beach wheelchairs and awareness for the need for ramps, crosswalks, accessible playground, Equally Empowered presentations for schools, various events that welcome the community

NOT THE R WORD, or any other offensive harmful language. Instead be nice, encouraging, accepting and thoughtful with your words.
How can we teach others about inclusion?
Be visible in your community, keeping a positive reputation and treat people the way you like to be treated.
