Includes all water ( in all forms) on Earth and in the atmosphere

HYRDOSPHERE

100

prefix kilo

1000

100

Plate movement creating volcanoes

plates converge at subduction zones causing rock to melt and then rise as magma forming volcanoes

100

GEOSPHERE

All physical features on Earth

100

Explain how plate tectonics relates to PANGAEA

The moving of the plates created a giant land mass about 250mya that broke apart and has moved to the present day locations.  The plates will continue to move and change the shape of landmasses.

200

All physical features of EARTH

GEOSPHERE

200

prefix centi

0.01

200

Explain the San Andreas Fault in California

The San Andreas Fault runs most of the length of the state of California and causes thousands of EQ each year, some of significant magnitude.

200

HYDROSPHERE

Water of ALL forms on the Earth and in the atmosphere.

200

Explain how Plate tectonics creates Volcanoes and EQ.

Movement of plates can always create seismic motion which creates EQ of all magnitudes.  In some cases the conditions are right to form volcanoes as well.  EQ can impact eruptions and eruptions can impact volcanoes.  All of this is dependent on PLATE MOTION.

300

All living things on earth

BIOSPHERE

300

prefix milli

0.001

300

Explain how Continental Drift Hypothesis helped to develop Plate tectonic theory

The basic evidence of Continental drift helped to establish plate tectonics once scientists were able to identify the manner in which the PLATES moved.

300

BIOSPHERE

All living things on Earth.

300

Explain the process of scientific method.

Scientific method is a sequence of steps that involves a systematic exploration of a particular question/problem.  It involves observations, testing, analysis, and forming conclusions.

400

the gas envelope surrounding Earth

ATMOSPHERE

400

prefix deci

0.1

400

Explain locations of Extra-terrestrial volcanism

Our moon, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter's moon Io

400

ATMOSPHERE

Gaseous envelope surrounding the Earth.

400

Explain how the Epicenter of an EQ is located.

Seismograph stations calculate how far they are from the EQ based on the time frame between the P and S waves.  They calculate this radius and use it with TWO other stations and where the circles intersect, indicates the location of the epicenter.

500

Name two spheres and give one example of how they interact

Answers will vary

500

metric system is based on what unit (number)

10

500

Pacific Ring of Fire

Large tectonic plate that is basically the Pacific Ocean, is moving to the Northwest, subducting and creating volcanoes and EQ along the boundary.  Most of the volcanic and EQ activity on earth takes place here

500

VISCOSITY

(Lava) Resistance to flow.

Explain UNIFORMITARIANISM as it relates to this semester of EARTH SCIENCE.

UNIFORMITARIANISM is the concept that the "present is the key to the past".  For processes like plate tectonics, EQ, and volcanoes, it demonstrates that these processes of the past are continuing today and will continue in the future.  By understanding what HAS happened, or what is CURRENTLY happening, we can gain a fuller understanding of the processes that shape our world.
