It was infuriating to be told what to do by civilians. Their voices, even when they called us for breakfast, enraged me so much that I would punch the wall, my locker, or anything that I was standing next to. A few days earlier, we could have decided whether they would live or die. Because of these things, we refused to do anything that we were asked to do, except eat. We had bread and tea for breakfast, rice and soup for both lunch and dinner.

What is the indirect Characterization? What is the author saying?

What is "Because of these things, we refused to do anything that we were asked to do, except eat.". The author is saying they were stubborn.

Other examples may be accepted

I lived alone in the quiet apartment for three days. Except it wasn’t quiet. Nowhere was quiet. I'd never spent more than a few hours in a city and found it impossible to defend myself from the strange noises that constantly invaded. The chirrup of crosswalk signals, the shrieking of sirens, the hissing of air breaks, even the hushed chatter of people strolling on the sidewalk–I heard every sound individually. My ears, accustomed to the silence of the peak, felt battered by them

What is the type of conflict? How do you know?

What is Character vs self because she is used to being alone and is sensitive to the noise of the big city

Pick textual evidence that supports the following main idea. Explain why

Main idea: When assumptions are made about people we don't know, it limits our capability to care for others.

Text:

Stopping was never part of the plan. And so, when Maurice spoke to me, I just kept going. Another thing to remember is that this was New York in the 1980s, a time when vagrants and panhandlers were as common a sight in the city as kids on bikes or moms with strollers…After a while you got used to the sight of them–hard, gaunt men and sad, haunted women, wearing rags, camped on corners, sleeping on grates, asking for change…And so we swept past them every day, great waves of us going on with our lives and accepting that there was nothing we could really do to help.

What is "And so we swept past them every day, great waves of us going on with our lives and accepting that there was nothing we could really do to help" because people made assumptions about who they were based on them being homeless, so people saw them as nothing.

500

What appeal is being used here and why?

It was infuriating to be told what to do by civilians. Their voices, even when they called us for breakfast, enraged me so much that I would punch the wall, my locker, or anything that I was standing next to. A few days earlier, we could have decided whether they would live or die. Because of these things, we refused to do anything that we were asked to do, except eat.

What is pathos because the author is clearly trying to appeal to your understanding of something that is annoying
