After King Vichitravirya died without any children, Satyavati asked her son Vyasa to help continue the royal family line. Vyasa fathered three children with the two widowed queens and a servant girl — but each child turned out very differently because of how the mother reacted to Vyasa. Explain what happened with each of the three women, and name the son each one had.

Satyavati asked Vyasa to father children with Vichitravirya's widows so the throne would have an heir. Because Vyasa was a powerful, intense-looking sage, each woman reacted with fear in her own way, and that affected her baby:

  • Ambika shut her eyes tightly in fear when she saw Vyasa — so her son, Dhritarashtra, was born blind.
  • Ambalika turned pale with fear — so her son, Pandu, was born pale and physically weak.
  • Because Satyavati wasn't happy with those results, she asked Ambika to visit Vyasa again — but Ambika was too afraid, so she sent her maid disguised as herself instead. The maid stayed calm and respectful, and her son, Vidura, was born healthy, strong, and wise.

The cities were laid out in a neat grid of streets, with wide main roads, a walled Citadel on high ground, and even drains and trash bins. People living there ate wheat, rice, and fruit, wore cotton clothes with jewelry, and their kids played with clay toys like carts with moving wheels.
