Makes a comparison between two seemingly unlike things, not using the terms "like" or "as"
What is Metaphor?
The point of the highest action or tension in a story.
What is Climax?
Greedy woman borrows a necklace and loses it.
What is "The Necklace"?
The feeling or the atmosphere the author creates in his/her story.
What is Mood?
A contrast between appearance and reality: usually reality is the opposite of what it seems. Three types: dramatic, situational and verbal.
What is irony?
The part of the story when the conflict is developing and events build toward the climax.
What is Rising Action?
Two men spend their lives fighting over land only to end up being killed on it by wolves.
What is "The Interlopers"
Character involved in the central conflict of the story- the main character.
What is Protagonist?
Something that represents something else.
What is Symbolism?
Part of the story that follows the climax and shows the result of the important action that happened at the climax.
What is Falling Action?
A woman kills her husband with a leg of lamb.
What is "Lamb to the Slaughter"?
The method of narration used: 1st Person, 3rd Person Objective, 3rd Person Limited, 3rd Person Omniscient
What is point of view?
Descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences - author describes smells, sights, taste, touch and hearing.
What is Imagery?
Beginning of the story that explains the setting and the important characters are introduced.
What is Exposition?
What is "The Sniper"?
Struggle between opposing forces in a story.
What is Conflict?
Giving human qualities to an object, animal or idea. An exmaple: The morning smiled upon her window.
What is Personification?
The part of the story when all questions are solved.
What is Resolution?
A man reflects on his time in the war and how purposeless it is.
What is "The Man He Killed"
The underlying message about life or human nature that an author wants the reader to understand.
What is Theme?
