What is a summary?
A restatement of a source's ideas in your own words!
What is a topic sentence?
A sentence that goes at the beginning of a paragraph and explains what the paragraph will be about.
What are thesis statements?
What is an introduction paragraph?
A paragraph that lays down the foundation of your essay.
How many absences can you have in SI?

What is the purpose of writing a summary?
(2 parts)
To give an overview of someone else's ideas, and to report your understanding of what a text says.
What are the 2 components of a topic sentence?
The TOPIC and the MAIN POINT.
What is evidence?
Direct quotes or facts that support your thesis statement.
What is a hook?
A sentence that grabs your reader and keeps them interested.
How can you contact us outside of class? (Hint: there's 3 ways!)

What should you TRY to avoid during a summary?
Quoting! If you absolutely must, make sure to cite.
What are the THREE parts of a paragraph?
Topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence.
What are the 3 basic components of a thesis statement?
Topic, argument, and support!
What are hook strategies? Name all 7!
Rhetorical questions, anecdote, bold statement, facts, quote, paint a picture, humor.

Topic sentence, introduction, signal phrase, analysis, conclusion
What are body paragraphs?
These are parts of your essay that contain evidence supporting your thesis statement.
What does a thesis statement do, and where does it go?
This should be towards the end of your introduction and transition to the rest of your essay.
