Aaliyah snaps her fingers, and deep gold sparks flying as if she struck metal to stone.  Everyone but Oliver can snap gold sparks.

The gold sparks help the reader imagine that the characters have magical abilities or special power. The sparks make the scene feel vivid, mysterious, and exciting, almost like magic is natural in their world. Since Oliver cannot create sparks, it also helps readers see that he is different from the others and may feel left out or less powerful.
