What is the function of the bones in your skeletal system?
They contain blood vessels that supply nutrients and the nerves signal pain.
What are the SIX functions of the skeletal system?
1. It supports & gives structure.
2. It works with the muscular system for MOVEMENT.
3. It protects vital organs (brain, lungs, heart).
4. It produces BLOOD CELLS in the bone marrow.
5. It helps our body with GROWTH.
6. It stores calcium.
What is a fracture?
Bones can be fractured or broken by a high-force impact such as a fall.
What is the function of the muscular system?
The function of the muscular system is it produces movement, helps circulate blood, and moves food through the digestive system.
What does the FLEXOR muscle do?
It is the muscle that BENDS the arm/wing.
What is the function of the ligaments?
Ligaments are flexible connective tissue that connect bones-to-bones.
What evidence do we have that supports the fact that bones are ALIVE?
We know bones are alive because they have their own blood vessels, are made of various cells, proteins, minerals and vitamins. This allows them to grow, transform and repair themselves throughout life.
What is a sprain?
A sprain is an injury to a LIGAMENT caused by stretching a joint too far. The tissues in the sprained ligament can tear and the joint swells up and hurst a lot!
What is the difference between a voluntary muscle and an involuntary muscle?
A voluntary muscle is one where YOU choose to make it move, but an involuntary muscles are the ones you do NOT control and these never get tired.
What does the EXTENSOR muscle do?
It is the muscle that straightens out - or EXTENDS - the arm/wing.
What is the function of cartilage?
Cartilage is strong, flexible and smooth tissue found at the ends of the bones and it allows bones to move smoothly across each other.
What are 3 things bones are made of?
1. Minerals
2. Connective tissue
3. Marrow
What is osteoporosis?
How do muscles work in pairs?
When one muscle shortens the opposite muscle lengthens. Good working between pairs of muscles allows for smooth controlled movement.
What does the TENDON do?
The tendon is what HOLDS the bone & muscle together.
Joints are where bones are connected and they help bones move.
What organs or systems does the skeletal system protect?
ALL OF THEM! The skull protects the brain, the vertebrae the spinal cord, the rib cage protects the heart, lungs, & liver and the clavicle & collarbone protect the torso.
What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a disease that causes joints to swell, stiffen, and hurt.
What is the skeletal muscle?
It is the muscle attached to your skeleton and it gives you shape and helps with movement.
What is the cardiac muscle?
It is the muscle tissue of the HEART.
What are the THREE types of joints and give an example of each one?
1. Fixed joints - they allow little or no movement and an example is the skull.
2. Hinge joints - they allow bones to move back & forth & examples are knees and elbows.
3. Ball and Socket joints - they rotate in large circles and examples are the shoulders and hips.
Explain FOUR ways that bones grow.
1. The skeleton of a growing fetus is made of cartilage.
2. As the baby grows, cartilage is replaced by bone.
3. The growth plate is at the ends of long bones & is made of cartilage where the bone grows. The growth plate makes new cells and new bone cells move into the cartilage and harden it to bone.
4. Even when bones stop growing, they can repair themselves when the break.
Who is at risk for osteoporosis?
White women and Asian women who are 50 years or older.
How do the muscular and skeletal systems work together?
The skeleton is what supports the weight of the body and it also protects the organs. It stores calcium too. The muscles in the muscular system do different things, but mostly they hold the bones in place and help with movement by contracting and pulling on the bones.
What is smooth muscle?
