What is Narcolepsy? 

Falling asleep at somewhat random times. There is no definitive reason that it's caused, but it is suggested that it can be caused by the lack of a brain chemical called hypocretin 

Defined by Merriam Webster dictionary as:  a condition characterized by brief attacks of deep sleep often occurring with cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations

Who Has Sleep Paralysis or Narcolepsy? 

Sleep paralysis tends to be linked to another mental disorder, so people who have mental disorders like, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia disorder, anxiety, etc. 

However, Narcolepsy is believed to only affect those with an issue with orexins

Ways to help Prevent sleep paralysis. 

There is no known way to stop an active episode however there are ways to help prevent one, such as having a consistent sleep cycle to help with your REM sleep cycle

Sleep paralysis is actually quite common most people have at least one episode in their life. But when combined with another disorder like anxiety it becomes a bigger problem.

About 75% of patients also experience cataplexy, a sudden loss of muscle control lasting a few seconds to 30 minutes, resulting in physical collapse without any loss of consciousness.

Other Ways to Help with Sleep Paralysis 

The bedroom should have a comfortable mattress and pillow, Bedroom with limited intrusion from light or noise,  Keeping a set pre-bed routine, avoid watching TV in the bedroom, Decrease consumption of caffeine and alcohol, especially in the evening, Discontinue use of electronic devices, including cell phones, for at least a half-hour before bed.

 Sleep paralysis is that feeling when you wake up and you can't move or talk. Often people say they feel like someone is watching them. The person is wear of what is fully going on the whole time. 

Also defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as: a complete temporary paralysis occurring in connection with sleep and especially upon waking

The primary symptom is an overwhelming feeling of fatigue

When a person's hypothalamus does not secrete enough orexins to keep the person from falling asleep.

Fun fact about Narcolepsy and Sleep Paralysis 

It is estimated that around 7.6 percent of the population has Sleep Paralysis. The number was much higher for students (28.3 percent), and psychiatric patients (31.9 percent).

It's estimated for Narcolepsy 0.05% of people have it. That's around 3 million people. However, it's estimated that only 25% of people are receiving treatment.
