The shortest sleep stage, it only lasts 5-10 minutes, and is the lightest stage of sleep.

A. Stage 1

B. Stage 2

C. Stage 3

What is stage 1

The first stage of the sleep cycle is a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. If you awaken someone during this stage, they might report that they were not really asleep.

  • Your brain slows down
  • Your heartbeat, your eye movements, and your breathing slows with it
  • Your body relaxes and your muscles may twitch

This brief period of sleep lasts for around five to 10 minutes. At this time, the brain is still fairly active and producing high amplitude theta waves, which are slow brainwaves occurring mostly in the frontal lobe of the brain

100

True or False

Time spent sleeping is more important than the Quality of sleep

What is false

the Quality of sleep is just as important as time spent sleeping overall .

 True or False

Exercise just before bedtime will help you get a better nights sleep.

What is False

While late exercises help you stay fitter, they can disrupt your stable heart rate, which is one of the core factors that can have an impact on your restorative sleep, according to the BT Telecommunications Group. Exercises, generally, also leave you dehydrated. Working out also releases the stress hormones in the body, leading your body to stay alert.

Such hormones and bright lights at the gym stop melatonin, the sleep hormone, from being produced. To avoid this, experts suggest a number of ways so that you can sleep after a good, sweating workout. To begin with, they say you you should refrain from exercising at least three hours before bedtime. A hot shower or a relaxing bath dashed with essential oils can also help.

This is the stage (NREM) in which some people experience sleep walking.

A. Stage 1

B. Stage 2

C. Stage 3

C. Stage 4

What is NREM Stage 3

NREM stage 3 sleep—a stage that is also referred to as delta sleep. This is a period of deep sleep where any noises or activity in the environment may fail to wake the sleeping person. Getting enough NREM stage 3 sleep allows you to feel refreshed the next day.

During NREM stage 3 sleep:

  • Your muscles are completely relaxed
  • Your blood pressure drops and breathing slows
  • You progress into your deepest sleep

It is during this deep sleep stage that your body starts its physical repairs.

Meanwhile, your brain consolidates declarative memories—for example, general knowledge, facts or statistics, personal experiences, and other things you have learned

* note: Sleepwalking, formally known as somnambulism, is a behavior disorder that originates during deep sleep and results in walking or performing other complex behaviors while still mostly asleep.

This stage is when your body temperature starts to drop and your heart rate slows.

A. Stage 2

B. Stage 3

C. Stage 4

What is stage 2?

According to the American Sleep Foundation, people spend approximately 50% of their total sleep time during NREM stage 2, which lasts for about 20 minutes per cycle.

You become less aware of your surroundings

  • Your body temperature drops
  • Your eye movements stop
  • Your breathing and heart rate become more regular

The brain also begins to produce bursts of rapid, rhythmic brain wave activity, which are known as sleep spindles. They are thought to be a feature of memory consolidation—when your brain gathers, processes, and filters new memories you acquired the previous day.

While this is occurring, your body slows down in preparation for NREM stage 3 sleep and REM sleep—the deep sleep stages when the brain and body repairs, restores, and resets for the coming da

300

What sleep disorder is characterized by snoring and witnessed pauses in breathing pattern?

What is obstructive sleep apnea

300

Which age group needs the most sleep?

Who are newborns and infants who sleep 14-17 hours

300

These are the two things to avoid before bed.

What is caffeine, and electronics

caffeine: A cup of coffee contains anywhere from 80 to 120 milligrams of caffeine per cup, and you probably already know you should avoid it right before bed. But some still like the idea of a hot drink after dinner and may not realize that although they're still several hours away from turning in, their habit could disturb sleep. Truth is, caffeine can stay in the body for up to 12 hours. "Even caffeine at lunch can be too close to bedtime for some people,"

electronics:
"The blue light given off by computers, smartphones, tablets, and TV prevents the production of melatonin which helps the body become sleepy,"  If you don't want to give up reading your Kindle Fire or using your iPad in bed, Keep the device at least 14 inches from your face and turn down your screen's brightness to reduce your risk of light-related sleep problems.

300

True or False

Sleep is not as important as food.

What is False

You can go a week without food but you can not go a week without any sleep.

400

This is the stage that you experience dreams in.

A. Stage 2

B. Stage 3

C. Stage 4

What stage 4 which is REM sleep.

While your brain is aroused with mental activities during REM sleep, the fourth sleep stage, your voluntary muscles become immobilized. It's in this stage that your brain's activity most closely resembles its activity during waking hours. However, your body is temporarily paralyzed—a good thing, as it prevents you from acting out your dreams.

REM sleep begins approximately 90 minutes after falling asleep. At this time

  • Your brain lights up with activity
  • Your body is relaxed and immobilized
  • Your breathing is faster and irregular
  • Your eyes move rapidly
  • You dream                                                                                                                        Like stage 3, memory consolidation also happens during REM sleep. However, it is thought that REM sleep is when emotions and emotional memories are processed and stored. Your brain also uses this time to cement information into memory, making it an important stage for learning.

What sleep disorder is characterized by a sudden awakening abruptly from sleep during the first third of the night. It can be accompanied by episodes of screaming, intense fear and flailing while still asleep?

What are night terrors.

Sleep terrors differ from nightmares. The dreamer of a nightmare wakes up from the dream and may remember details, but a person who has a sleep terror episode remains asleep. Children usually don't remember anything about their sleep terrors in the morning. Adults may recall a dream fragment they had during the sleep terrors.

Sleep terrors generally occur in the first third to first half of the night, and rarely during naps. A sleep terror may lead to sleepwalking.

During a sleep terror episode, a person may:

  • Begin with a frightening scream or shout
  • Sit up in bed and appear frightened
  • Stare wide-eyed
  • Sweat, breathe heavily, and have a racing pulse, flushed face and dilated pupils
  • Kick and thrash
  • Be hard to awaken, and be confused if awakened
  • Be inconsolable
  • Have no or little memory of the event the next morning
  • Possibly, get out of bed and run around the house or have aggressive behavior if blocked or restrained
400

What is the recommended amount of sleep for a teenager 14-17 years of age.

A. 2-4 hrs

B. 5-7 hrs

C. 8-10 hrs

What is 8-10 hours.

400

If you have a daytime nap what is the recommended length of daytime sleep?

What is 10-45 minutes.

One Harvard study published last year showed that a 45-minute nap improves learning and memory. Napping reduces stress and lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke, diabetes, and excessive weight gain. Getting even the briefest nap is better than nothing.

500

What sleep disorder is characterized by sudden and uncontrolled urges to fall asleep and accompanied by sudden muscle weakness?

What is narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that affects your ability to wake and sleep. People with narcolepsy have excessive, uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. They may also suddenly fall asleep at any time, during any type of activity. In a typical sleep cycle, we enter the early stages of sleep, then the deeper stages, and finally (after about 90 minutes) rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. People with narcolepsy go into REM sleep almost immediately in the sleep cycle and sometimes while they’re awake.

Type 1 narcolepsy comes with a sudden loss of muscle tone that causes weakness and makes you unable to control your muscles (cataplexy). Type 2 is narcolepsy without cataplexy.

The cause of narcolepsy isn't well understood but may involve genetic factors and abnormal signaling in the brain.

500

What is the recommended amount of sleep for older individuals 65 years and older?

A. 5-6 hrs

B   7-8 hrs

C. 9-10 hrs

What is 7-8 hours?

500

True or False

In order to get better sleep you have to get more daylight exposure.

what is True

Natural sunlight or bright light during the day helps keep your circadian rhythm healthy. This improves daytime energy, as well as nighttime sleep quality and duration.

In people with insomnia, daytime bright light exposure improved sleep quality and duration. It also reduced the time it took to fall asleep by 83%.

A similar study in older adults found that 2 hours of bright light exposure during the day increased the amount of sleep by 2 hours and sleep efficiency by 80%. While most research involves people with severe sleep issues, daily light exposure will most likely help you even if you experience average sleep.

Try getting daily sunlight exposure or — if this is not practical — invest in an artificial bright light device or bulbs.
