Discuss the difference between desensitization and habituation.

Habituation is a decrease in response to a stimulus after repeated presentations.

Desensitization is a reduction in response to stimuli that is achieved by such means as deconditioning techniques- Ex: small approximations.

Example: Construction noise

Habituation would occur over time as the noise is continually presented. For example, you stop "hearing the jack hammering"

Desensitization occurs if we reinforced boys for calm behavior while quiet noise was made, and worked up to load jack hammering. Gradual approximations are made, so that a negative response is not elicited. The goal is to become less reactive to the stimulus.

Frankie/ Hana example.
