It is a hot, dry rain shadow region in the northeastern part of the Brazilian Highlands. It is caused because the highlands block the moisture-carrying South East Trade Winds.

The Southwest Monsoon Winds blow parallel to the Aravalli Range. Because the mountains do not block these moisture-laden winds, they pass over without releasing much rain.
