The great lakes were formed by glaciers. As the glaciers moved they formed deep pits on the surface below them, when the glaciers melted the leftover water was stored in these dents/pits in the ground, forming lakes.

The great plains are higher and drier and grow wheat, they are a part of the western section of the MW. The central plains are better for growing corn and are on the eastern part of MW. The central plains have more rain and moisture.

The MW is important to transportation and trade because it is centrally located in the US. It is a hub for trading posts (has lots of distribution and manufacturing centers), and tons of infrastructure (roads and railroads). It has major rivers used for transportation as well!
