Who was Dread Scott and what was the Dread Scott decision?

Dread Scott was a slave who tried to gain freedom. The Dread Scott decision was the Supreme Court ruling against making Dread Scott a free man. This was for the following three reasons: not a citizen, was property so slave holders could take him anywhere in the federal territories, and the laws of Illinois had no effect on him because he was a citizen of Missouri.
