They wanted full independence from Britain and an entirely different government from them. They wanted the people to rule and no hint of monarchy.

The Declaration of Independence states that the authority of governments to rule comes directly from “the consent of the governed.” Thomas Jefferson was one of the well known member who helped write it.
Those selected to govern do so on the understanding that their purpose is to protect individuals’ rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” (JOHN LOCKE!!)
People retain the right to abolish governments that fail to live up to this purpose.

THE GOAL: Weak Legislative System and Weak Central Government (Confederation Congress)
Each state, no matter how large or small, had one vote in the Confederation Congress.
Approval from nine states was required to pass a new law.
To amend the Articles, all 13 states needed to approve the change.
After the experience under British rule, the Founders wanted to avoid creating a strong centralized government that could infringe on individual rights.

Yes! Each state has their own constitution because each states needs are different. But they all do still abide by the Federal government constitution.
How can Americans participate in government?
One way that the American people express their point of view is by voting for representatives who support their perspective. Nearly every U.S. citizen, age 18 or older, can affect the actions of the government.
Another way is through writing letters to their state governor.
