What is a Royal Colony?

Royal Colonies were ruled directly by an English Monarch. They were owned by the king and appointed by the crown. All of the Crown’s orders and wishes were fulfilled over the interests of the local colonists.

The brother in law of Anne Hutchison. He founded the town of Exeter, New Hampshire, after being banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was exiled after controversies that challenged and threatened the Puritan leaders of the Colony.

What is a charter colony?

A Charter colony was a self governed colony, and charters were granted to the colonists rather than proprietors. While creating the charters, the crown established the rules for government, but colonists had a lot of freedom between those rules.

Who was Anne Hutchison?


Anne Hutchison was involved in the Antimonian Controversy, a religious and political conflict in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Hutchison and her followers disagreed with the Puritan views in this conflict, leading to her banishment from the colony. She had a trial, and she was doing well until she said she talked to God. Then, she was found guilty and exiled. At that time, no one, especially women, could talk to God.

Proprietary colonies were established in territories granted by the Crown, and the power was given to one or more proprietors who had absolute governing rights. They controlled all of the government and in return were granted political or financial favors. All of the proprietors reported directly back to the king.

Rhode Island Minister. Instituted religious tolerance and freedom in his colony. The 1st Jewish Synagogue was created. He set precedents for religious freedom and the separation of the church and the state. He also had good relations with the Native Americans.
