Federalism is the democratic ideal that says that there are powers that are specifically for the federal government (like coining money and declaring war) and powers specifically for the state governments (like managing education) and also that there are powers shared between the federal and state governments (like taxing citizens).

Which amendment protects citizens from cruel and unusual punishment from the government? What does this mean?

The 8th Amendment. This means that the government cannot give an outrageous punishment to anyone even if they are found guilty of a crime. The punishment has to fit or make sense for the crime committed.

The Atlantic Ocean is on the east coast of the United States. The Pacific Ocean is on the west coast of the United States.

Some Southerners believed that bringing Africans to the New World was providing them with a good life. They believed that working on plantations provided protection for them and a lifestyle of honest work in beautiful locations. This bias can be seen in the images and text from the time period defending the practice of slavery in the south.

Judicial Review is the power to strike down laws and statutes that they find to violate the Constitution of the United States. The Supreme Court case that established Judicial Review is Marbury vs. Madison.

The colonists believed that the British rule in the colonies was oppressive. They believed that the role of government is to protect the rights of the people.

What is the elastic clause? Who used this clause to justify the creation of a National Bank? Explain.

The elastic clause says that certain powers in the government are implied even though they are not explicitly stated in the Constitution. Alexander Hamilton used this argument to justify the creation of the National Bank because he argued that the power to create a bank is necessary to perform the other functions of government like collecting taxes and regulating trade.

Why were pirates a problem in the Carolinas?

Pirates, like Blackbeard, set up blockades in the harbors that interrupted colonial trade, they set ransoms, and attacked ships. The Lords’ Proprietors in the Carolina colony struggled to maintain control of the colony due in part to the piracy in the Atlantic Ocean.

What is the definition of Checks and Balances? What is an example of this democratic ideal?

The Checks and Balances system provides each branch of government with individual powers to check the other branches and prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful. 

  • An example of Checks and Balances is when the Legislative Branch proposes a law (called a bill), the Executive Branch gets to choose if that proposed bill actually becomes a law or not. The Executive Branch will either sign the bill into law or veto the bill to send it back to the Legislative Branch.

The Edenton Tea Party was similar to the Boston Tea Party but was made up of women. How did this differ from the Boston Tea Party? Why was the Edenton Tea Party not taken seriously by the British?

The Edenton Tea Party was in a different location than the Boston Tea Party. Although both of these events were protests of the British policies in the colonies, the British were not concerned about the Edenton Tea Party because the protestors were women.

What was the significance of the colony of Roanoke?

Roanoke was the first attempt at an English settlement in the New World. Sir Walter Raleigh led the expedition. Leaders went back to England for more supplies and when they returned the colony had disappeared.

As the British colonized the New World, how did their presence impact the Native Americans? Africans? (don't have to get it word for word)

  • Colonization in the New World led to a decline in the Native American populations due to the introduction of new diseases and the killing of Native Americans in conflict over land. Native Americans and Europeans had very different views on the world and how land and natural resources should be used which contributed to the issues between the two.

  • Colonization in the New World led to an increase of Africans in the colonies due to the demand for laborers on plantations.

Who signed the Indian Removal Act? Which Native American tribe was most affected by this legislation?

Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law which forcibly removed Native Americans in the southeastern United States to reservations in the western territories. The tribe most affected by this was the Cherokee who were forced to suffer along the Trail of Tears. On this route many died.
