On November 19, 1863, there was a service at Gettysburg, where an articulate scholar, Edward Everett, told a two-hour address. After Edward Everett spoke, President Abraham Lincoln spoke. He gave a speech for two minutes which was named the Gettysburg Address. In his speech, he said what the war meant to him. Because of his speech, many worried Americans looked forward on the images of battlefield and death and they focused on other things.

One major thing that North had that the South did not was Abraham Lincoln. He was intelligent and dedicated to the North which caused the North to win. Some advantages that the North had was a larger population. The North's population consisted of forty-two percent more than the South. Additionally, the North had a better banking system than the South which assisted in raising money needed for the war. The North owned more ships and had more members from the navy than the South. Some disadvantages the North had was trying to get some of the states from the Confederacy back to the Union. Also, during that time, people remembered what happened during the American Revolution when the smaller colonies won independence over a wealthy colony, and people thought the same thing would happen and the South would win.

After this, President Abraham Lincoln appointed a new general to lead the Union's army. The general's name was George B. McClellan and his army was called the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln also called in more volunteers for the army.

Because of this call, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas joined the Confederacy. This was very bad for the Union because these four states supplied the Confederacy with soldiers, animals, industry, and food. This immensely changed the chance of the Confederacy winning independence.

The Civil War was one of the most tragic times for the United States of America. In total, more than 600,000 soldier ended up dying and cost billions of dollars which were used to fix all the damage, most damage in the South. There were also many hatred feeling going around from the South who lost, going to the North, who won. There were good things that came out of the war. Because of the North's victory, the Union was saved. Also, the federal government became stronger and will never be overthrown again. Lastly, millions of former slaves were let go and are free, who are now citizens.

Women had jobs like being teachers, office workers, salesclerks, government workers, factory workers, and farm managers. Also, many women were nurses for the wounded and for those who got sick. The men did not like the fact that women were doing male work. The women overlooked the men's objections.

The South had a vast population of whites fighting with them. Also, the South had the advantage of fighting in known territory to them because they were defending their land. Furthermore, the military leadership in the South was greater than the North because the South had many people who had military training which supplied the South with many officers. However, the South had a smaller population than the North, and they also had very few factories to make weapons needed for the war. Because of that, the South needed supplies to be delivered to them and that was very hard considering they had fewer train tracks which stopped the Confederacy from delivering food and supplies.

The Confederate soldiers were called the Rebels and there were 112,000 soldiers. The Union soldiers were called the Yankees and there were 187,000 soldiers.

Since Abraham Lincoln became president he wanted to first stop slavery from growing then he would abolish it forever. However, during the war their was a delicate situation going on. He knew slavery was immoral but if he stated he was totally against slavery, he would divide the people from the North and the border states. Finally, Lincoln decided that “all men everywhere could be free” as his final words about the slavery issue.

The economy in the South was worse than the economy in the North. Because a lot of the fighting from the war happened in the South, they had more damage to repair than the North. By the very end of the war, more than a thousand people were homeless and barely any cities survived the war because they were all burned down. Because of the blockade the North set up, the South could not import or export anything making it hard to get essential goods.

The life of the soldiers had its ups and downs. Some good memories that the soldiers had was the letters from home, the songs, and the stories they all shared. There were also many bad memories the soldiers had. For instance, their lives were routine drills all the time, they ate bad food, the weather consisted of rain and snow, and their lives were dull.

The “Emancipation Proclamation” stated that “all persons held as slaves within any state...in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” Basically, the “Emancipation Proclamation” banned slavery from anywhere in the United States.

On April 9th Robert E. Lee and his troops finally surrendered to General Grant. They surrendered in a small village called the Appomattox Court House where General Grant stated that the Confederate soldiers had to drop their weapons but were free to return home. General Grant allowed them to keep their horse so they could travel home. Also, General Grant ordered that an abundance of food would be sent to Lee and his starving men.

The South occupied a ship which was abandoned by the North and they rebuilt the ship which was build out of wood and they rebuilt it out of iron plates. They renamed the ship “Virginia” from the “Merrimack” which the North called it. When the South finally fought the North in 1862, they used the “Virginia” and when the Union attacked it, no damage occurred because the North was using wood which just ricocheted off the iron plates.
The South did not plan to just let the North block them off by the blockades. Therefore, what did the Southerners do?

The way the North and South mostly managed was by borrowing money by raising taxes. The North borrowed more than two million dollars by selling war bonds that ensured high interest. The South borrowed more than seven hundred million dollars which came with so many bonds than people refused to buy any more.

Because of the “Emancipation Proclamation” and the Thirteenth Amendment, African Americans were allowed to enlist to go to the army. Even though they were not allowed to before, they still found a way to help the North in the war. The African Americans spied behind the Confederate lines. For example, Harriet Tubman-the woman who helped hundreds of slaves into freedom- spied on the Confederate lines as well.

He led the Union's army to victory. General Grant kept pressuring the South which caused the South to defend their capitol- Richmond- while struggling with sickness, hunger, casualties, and desertion. Then, General Grant and his troops broke the Confederate lines on April 2, 1865.

General McClellan wanted to be an effective fighting source for the North. General McClellan was worried that his troops were not ready to fight. He also heard that the size of the Rebels increased, and so he hesitated about sending his troops in. When General McClellan could not hold off any longer, he sent his troops in March 1862. The goal was to capture the capitol of the Confederacy-Richmond.

During the war, prices increased vastly and more than wages did. The increase of prices caused many difficulties for the people who worked. In the end, the Northern economy was different. Many things increased like the production of coal, iron, and clothing, as well as railroad traffic. Because the Union needed food for the troops, farmers were successful.

The Union captured Fort Henry which was on the Tennessee River. They also captured Fort Donelson which was on the Cumberland River. By getting these rivers, it opened a way for the Union troops to go into Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. This sent the Confederates out of Kentucky which was bad because the South wanted to convince Kentucky into seceding.
One of the North's goals since the beginning of the war was to gain control of the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers. This would cause the Confederacy to split, making it harder to transport goods. What did the Union do in 1862 in order to gain control of these rivers?

Lincoln did this because it would prevent the South from exporting and importing things they needed like exporting cotton and importing supplies needed for the war. This was effective because it caused many problems for the South. When the South needed things like coffee, shoes, guns, and ammunition it was extremely hard for them to get these items because of the blockade.

Not only was this sad, but this caused people to have pity on one another. For example, Abraham Lincoln's wife had a brother, half brothers, an brother-in-laws who fought against the Union and in the Confederate army. The opposite approach also occurred. This caused people to kill their family members which was a shameful event in American History when we were fighting against one another.
During the Civil War, many conflicts occurred about how people were set to fight against their family, friends, and neighbors. Why was this bad?
