You just got back your science test. You missed 3 questions out of 15. What size problem is that?

Small problem: you still got an 80% on the test- that's a good grade. More importantly, you studied and tried your best. You should be proud.

What would be an appropriate reaction to this problem?

Someone asks "how are you doing?" and you respond with "I loved the newest episode of Danger Force." Is this an expected or unexpected behavior?

UNEXPECTED behavior. If someone asks you a question, you need to answer their question before making a comment about something else. You want to respond on topic until both parties agree to move on. An expected behavior here would be to say" "I'm doing well, thanks.  How are you doing?"

Who is the Director of Woodland Valley Rails?

Declan

Jim was trying to play the guitar but was having a very hard time playing the write chords. Which is an example of flexible thinking a) "I'll never be good at this!" b) "I'm the worst at guitar. I should quit" or c) "I'm not good at this now, but that's okay, I'm new to it and if I practice I may get better" ?

C. "I'm not good at this now, but that's okay I'm new to it and if I practice I may get better." is an example of flexible thinking. Jim is not thinking in extremes of never and worst. He recognizes he's not good at it but will try to get better.

The locomotive starts the train, how a conversation train that would be using a greeting such as "hi", "Hello" or "good morning." The tender comes next. What is something the tender may say?

"How are you", "How are you doing?", "What's up" are examples of something the tender would say. These words give the conversation power to keep going, just as the coal gives the power to a train.

You are trying to talk to your social teacher through Zoom but the sound isn't working. What size problem is that?

Medium problem: This is a medium problem because you can't fix it on your own and need to ask your parents for help.
115

You are upset after falling off of a chair. You begin to yell at the chair for trying to hurt you. Your friends see this and look confused. Why do they look confused?

Because yelling at the chair for trying to hurt me is an unexpected behavior. It is unexpected because chair's do not have brains and cannot try to hurt someone. What happened was an accident. What is an example of an expected behavior in this situation?

115

How many episodes are there of Woodland Valley Rails?

You are trying to give examples of "extreme thinking" when helping your sister with social thinking. Which is an example of thinking with extremes? a) I usually make the right choice but sometimes act too quickly and make a choice that isn't too great.  b) I am always making the absolute worst choice c) I try really hard to make good choices but occasionally may make a mistake

b) I am always making the absolute worst choice.

Always and worst are examples of "Extreme thinking" where it's All or Nothing and doesn't take into consideration all the areas of "grey" or the rest of the scale/spectrum of choices and times.

The train cars in the conversation train are things that people say back and forth to one another. One person should talk about a) something related to what the other person just said b) something that's on their mind or c) anything at all!!

a) something related to what the other person just said.  If they talk about something else, the other person may be confused and the conversation may end early.

You get out while playing four square and yell "I'm the worst!" and stomp around the driveway. Does this reaction match the size of the problem? Yes or No.

No, they do not match. This is a medium reaction for a small problem.  We created a new problem for someone. What new problem did we create? What's an example of a reaction that would match the size of the problem?

380

You're playing cars with your friend at your house and you ask your friend "You can pick first, which car do you want to play with.?"

EXPECTED behavior, when you have a guest you want to be polite and ask what they want to do or what they want to play with. If you both agreed on cars, you also want to be polite by giving them a first pick of cars.

380

Which episode of Woodland Valley Rails was a crossover episode?

Episode 6. It was a crossover with Darran's series about hot wheels.

380

What are 2 examples of "flexible, middle words" for the extreme words of "Always" and "Never"

Some examples include: Sometimes, Rarely, Often, Occasionally, Usually, Every once in a while, Not usually, etc.

If you say something that's not related to what the person just said, what did you do to the conversation train?

Derailed it! A train needs to stay on track and if we respond OFF-TOPIC we are going off of the track and derailing the train.

You start to get mild indigestion while eating. You calmly and quietly stand up and walk around the kitchen with your hands up. Does this reaction match the size of the problem?

Yes, it's a small problem and is a small reaction.  We did not create any new problems for anyone and we were able to make our indigestion go away all on our own.

777

You are playing air hockey and after your opponent scores a few times, you get upset, say "i'm such a loser, you can score as much as you want, because I lose lose lose." Is this an expected or unexpected behavior?

UNEXPECTED behavior. When playing games and sports, it is expected that everyone will use sportsmanship and handle if scored on or losing positively. The person you are playing with probably feels uncomfortable now and may not want to play with you again.  What is an example of an Expected behavior in this situation?

True or False: The Director and the Producer are the same person for Woodland Valley Rails.

True: Declan is both the director and producer

While walking by his mom, Johnny accidentally kick her. Johnny says "Oh no, you have to kick me now!! It's the only wait it's fair, do it, kick me!" Is Johnny using black and white thinking or flexible thinking?

Black and white thinking. It was an accident so Johnny can just say sorry and ask his mom if she's okay.  Instead, Johnny is stuck in his thinking that things "HAVE TO BE" (extreme words!) to be fair. How does this make Johnny's mom feel? To be a flexible thinker, Johnny can see that it was an accident and it doesn't have to be even.

Allison says "how do you like all the rain we've been having?" it's your turn to respond. What should you say to stay on track? a) "ok, I got a new Pokemon card!" b) "I don't like it very much. I haven't been able to go outside as much as I'd like. How about you?"or c) "I think i'm going to eat soup for lunch today."

b) "I don't like it very much. I haven't been able to go outside as much as I'd like. How about you?" This answers Allison's question, makes a comment about it and then asks Allison a question. It's a great response to stay on track and keep the conversation going!

At recess, you and another kid start to argue about the rules of the football game.  The other kid hits you. Does the size of the problem and reaction match?

You tell the kid "It's not okay that you hit me, I'm going to find something else to play." Was that an appropriate reaction?

1) No- the problem was small and the other kid had a medium reaction. He could be creating a new problem including you getting hurt, getting into a bigger argument or getting into trouble.

2) Yes, it was a medium problem and you had a small reaction.  You addressed the problem and calmly handled it. If we would have hit him back we could have created more problems for yourself and if we had no reaction of ignoring the friend may think it's okay to hit you.

1006

You have a friend playing at your house. After playing for sometime in the basement, you decide to go play Legos in your bedroom. You don't tell your friend this but she follows you. 1) Is not telling your friend where you are going an expected or unexpected behavior? 2) Is your friend following you while at your house an expected or unexpected behavior?

1) Unexpected: Having a friend over means staying with them and letting them know what you are doing for the duration of their visit.

2) Expected: The friend is there to visit you and will follow you where you go and you should communicate that to them and ask them what they want to do as well.

True or False: There is a train character named Mason on Woodland Valley Rails.

True: Mason is a character on Woodland Valley Rails

1006

Jessica says to you "I'm always messing up this math homework." What is something you could say to Jessica to help her use flexible thinking? a) No, not always. Last time you got a A, remember?! b) Sometimes I mess up too, but I think we both do pretty good most of the time. Is there anything I can help you with? or c) both answers would help her use flexible thinking

c) Both answers would help her use flexible thinking. Correcting Jessica by talking about times she didn't mess up show that "Always" is an extreme and doesn't match how she usually does in Math. This may help Jessica realize she can do good in Math too and sometimes it's just hard and may need help.

The kaboose is the end of the train and in the case of the conversation train, the end of the conversation. What is something you can say to end a conversation?
Some examples include:

"I have to go, great talking to you." "Well, it's been nice talking to you but I should get going. Hope to talk to you soon." "Thanks for the chat, but I gotta run, see ya soon!"

You want to tell the person you are ending the conversation and make a comment about the conversation or make a comment about talking again.
