Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney, along with 6 other judges ruled that not only should Dred Scott remain a slave, but that all blacks in the United States, free or enslaved, are not citizens and should not be allowed to sue in court at all.

Enslaved African Americans had no legal rights. They were considered "chattel," or property. Free African Americans in the north were not equal citizens to whites. They did not have the right to vote or hold office. They had a harder time finding work than whites because of racism that still existed in the north.
