What do identity slurs have to do with the goal of using scholarly language in the classroom?

Identity slurs are inappropriate especially in a space where you have a 'captive audience' and those around you are not really there by choice.  In that case (ex. work/school) your freedom is speech is limited to only using words that do not carry the risk of acting as a way of enacting interpersonal oppression on others around you.

Be sure to eat the free food that the school provides before school, on the 10 minute break, and at lunch; or pack snacks in your backpack to eat in the hall in between classes from now on.

A way of including teens in the decisions made around rules by explaining the 'why' behind rules, listening to the teens feelings, questions and opinions about rules, and carving out time to have dialogues about rules over time to problem solve together.

stand near the door and turn away from the class for more privacy, and then wash my hands in the sink afterwards for my personal hygiene.

put my head down but still keep my eyes out and looking at the lesson; paying attention as I rest a bit.
