What is a solution focused conversation?

A conversation that focuses on what people want to achieve rather than on the problems that made them seek help.

100

Can I have a solution focused conversation the next day if a situation happens at the end of the day.

Yes!  Just be sure the student is aware that the incident happened the day before and turn in the form by the end of the day.

100

Where are solution focused notes turned in?

Place completed notes in Ms. Greenwood's box.

100

If a student is noncompliant and having difficulties engaging the conversation, what can be done?

The adult can wait until a later time to initiate the conversation so that a clear understanding can be agreed upon.

100

How are students made aware of what a solution focused conversation is and when they happen?

Teachers should explain the process to students when they are teaching and reviewing class and school-wide expectations.

200

Why is it important to conduct solution focused conversations with students?

We want to help students find solutions to their problems and empower them to make better decisions in the future.

200

Can a solution focused conversation be postponed?

Absolutely!  If the situation is too heated to address as the moment, it is okay to revisit the conversation at a later time within the same day.

200

When do solution focused notes need to be turned in to Ms. Greenwood?

by the end of the school day when the conversation was completed

200

Is there a simplified version of the solution focused conversation?

YES! There are 2 versions that can be used to document the conversation.  Upper grades are welcome to use the primary form for students who need differentiation.

200

What can we do to ensure that solution focused conversations are successful at VES?

 Implement with fidelity campus-wide

300

When should solution focused conversations take place?

Once a verbal warning has been given and student has not complied, the adult can initiate a conversation to target the undesired behavior.

300

How can you present a solution focused conversation without it making the student feel like he/she is being punished?

Make it a 1-on-1 conversation, think of tone of voice and body language, put more emphasis on the solution rather than the undesired behavior (problem)

300

How can we find out how many solution focused notes a student has received?

An excel sheet will be shared with you and updated by Ms. Greenwood as notes are received and documented.
300

How will I know what questions to ask during the conversation?

Questions are provided on the solution focused notes.  They are designed to take students through the stages to help reflect on behavior and create solutions.

300

Where are solution focused notes located?

You can find them in the far-right cabinet in the teacher workroom.  It is labeled solution focused notes.

400

Where should solution focused conversations be conducted?

In privacy; not in front of the entire class

400

How do we respond when students are not showing interest in being apart of the solution focused conversation to find solutions?

Teachers can revisit the conversation at a later time in hopes that students will make a connection to their behavior and want to find solutions.

**If a teacher has to revisit a conversation the following day, turn in the note before the end of that school day.

400

How many solution focused notes can a child receive before a Skyward referral is entered?

The child must have 2 solution focused notes from any teacher, including Specials teachers.  When another behavior is exhibited, the teacher will enter the referral.  A reminder email will be sent by Ms. Greenwood once the child reaches this threshold.

400

Once a student has received 2 solution focused notes, what should be included in the Skyward referral.

Please note that the student has received 2 solution focused notes previously (see the spreadsheet shared by Ms. Greenwood).  Also put detailed information about the behaviors that warrants the referral and that parent contact has been made. (DO NOT INCLUDE OTHER STUDENTS' NAMES!)

400

Who can give solution focused notes?

Any staff member can give solution focused notes for undesired behaviors that are exhibited.
500

Why is a solution focused conversation different than a warning or general conversation?

The solution focused conversation is structured and relates to finding solutions to ongoing problems before they receive consequences from the office/administrators.

500

If a conversation has to be revisited because the first was unsuccessful, does that count as a 2nd solution focused note?

NO!  We believe in giving students an opportunity to calm down and try again to find solutions.

**If you have two attempts on a conversation, document the attempts and turn it in the 2nd time.  Also make parents and Ms. Greenwood aware of both attempts.

500

If a solution focused conversation fails and will need to be revisited the following day, when should parents be informed?

Call parents before you leave to inform them of the incident and failed attempt; let them know you will try again the next day and call with updates.

500
What happens once a student receives a referral for 2 solution focused notes?

The process starts over.  They will receive another 2 and another referral will be entered.

500

Who can enter referrals for students?

Homeroom and Specials teachers must enter the referrals for students.  If you see a behavior that warrants a write-up, get with the homeroom teacher to input and contact parents.
